Some of our neighbors are a wee bit nosey.
No scratch that. All neighbors in the country are nosey. You can’t get away with anything out here. You can’t even… say… start packing without a four-legged neighbor marching up to the window and demanding,
“Hey, what’s going on!”
“We’re going away for a little bit,” I tell him.

This is my grandfather:
Our family lost him to a 10-year battle with Alzheimer’s. I was working for my Senator in Washington DC when I got the call. I was a junior in college.
His death was really hard on me.
My grandfather and I were not close. We lived in the same town, but he’d raised ten kids. I guess you could say he was kind of burned out on being around kids by the time I came along! As a kid, I could see that my grandfather had great relationships with my adult cousins. But when I became adult-ish, it was too late. He had become a shell of himself, completely there in body but not at all in mind.

Yesterday morning started like so many mornings.
Klomp-klomp etta klomp-komp. Klomp-klomp etta klomp-komp.
We have deer on the roof again. Yes! I jump from the computer, and my chair almost falls to the floor. ”Martin!” I shout. ”Santa is coming!”
He grumbles a little; he’s still trying to sleep.
“Santa, Martin! Santa.”

I have a confession. After I snapped this picture, I went running back into the house for warmer clothes.
Most of the mountains around here look about like this:
No. I’m lying.
That’s actually a picture I took last June when Martin and I got back to the United States.
Yes – that is a normal June 20th photo around here.

Hello little February fox in my parents’ yard. I bet you’re ready for spring. Me too.
But if I remember right, spring doesn’t come here until May or June. So we’ll just have to sit tight.
I’m sure you have lots to do in the meantime. I know I do! Here’s a couple of things we’ve got going on this month:
I’m sure we’ll be shoveling more snow, too. You even got some on your face!
