Here’s how one end of the hangar looked before we took on the remodel:

Clutter is gone. Heating system is starting to go in. Most lower walls are deep scrubbed.

Where Do Our Clothes Come From?

I had a classmate from Turkey when I lived in Berlin. Before she got married to an older Turkish man in Berlin and joined our class, she worked in a sock factory in a small Turkish town. She started her job when she was 14 years old.

Our German was never good enough for me to ask her questions about working in a factory or to sit down and just chat and become friends. She would get mixed up whenever a classmate would ask her any question.

The Depressing Part of Decluttering

We’re doing it! This week, the hangar is undergoing some serious transformations. Our piles to recycle and throw away are already heaping. The donate/sell pile includes hundreds of lightbulbs, airplane posters, WWII airplane instruments, and trunks. We’ve been seriously attacking the attic.

Is the No New Clothes Challenge Worth It?

I’m not sure what to say.

“Oh Katie, what a cute shirt!  Where did you get it?”

“Oh thanks!  It’s from Ann Taylor Loft… umm… over two years ago.”

I keep thinking about how I should probably start buying more clothes again.  I don’t need new clothes.  So I stop and ask myself why I’m compelled to go buy some then.  And you know what I figure?  I think I should go buy more clothes because THAT’S WHAT PEOPLE DO.

On Not Having an Orderly House

Back when I fully intended to work in the corporate world, I was ecstatic to land my first big job.  A couple of weeks later, my sister stopped by to say hello.  She looked around the little apartment Martin and I had.

Then she said in awe,

“Katie, I didn’t think I’d ever see dust where you live!”

I froze.  I laughed.  And then for the first time, my sister stuck out a finger and swirled it across the dust on my shelf.  It was her great victory.  She was ready to hug me in only the way a little sister finding a flaw in her bigger sister ever could.
