An Ice Maker?

If you want, you can go ahead and stand up at your desk for a quick second. Shake your bum. Make little fists and twist your arms back and forth. Smile like crazy. And nod your head to that imaginary music.

Are you doing it?

‘Cause man, oh man. We’re doing it here!

Some steady changes are happening at the hangar loft. The most obvious is in the kitchen.

That’s our pantry in the left corner. It’s huge and wonderful.

Journaling : Drilling the Well

Thanks to everyone who purchased a journal during the sweet little anniversary sale (which isn’t over yet). Oh wow!

I’m not sure if there’s a good way to say it. But the profits from all of your lovely purchases? They’ve all gone down the drain this week.

I’m so sorry!

But we had such a good reason to drain all funds. The drillers were here! We needed them to complete the loop for our geothermal heating system. The well currently at the hangar will pump in the water; we’ll extract the warmth from the water in the winter (and coolness in the summer… even though the water is always the same temperature in the earth). Then we’ll slip the water back into the ground through the above well. Such an exciting first step.

Decorating: German vs. American

At some point, I’m sure you’ve all wondered, “When’s Katie going to start talking about the decor of the hangar loft she’s remodeling?!”

And that’s a pretty darn good question! It is the good stuff after all.

So here’s the truth: I haven’t started thinking about it yet. I’m thinking so structurally.  (Now don’t you go thinking that I sound like an engineer. I’m still the family doodler. I just have to make sure not to doodle the cart in front of the horse if you catch my drift.)

When I started Making This Home, I was an expat blogger.  I was a home remodel blogger.

I did not pause to figure out what direction my blog would take.  What about when we were in the United States?  What about when our remodel was finished?  You can only do so much remodeling to a 480 square foot apartment; I didn’t even think about it.

I just wanted to write.  Swap experiences.  Connect.  Celebrate the moments.

St. Nicholas Day is Coming

December 3rd, 2010

We’re chomping at the bit to discover…

will St. Nicholas visit the United States on December 6th?

Last year in Germany, we set our shoes by the door.  If kids have chimneys, they put their shoes there.  They sing songs and put a carrot or hay in their shoes for St. Nicholas to give to his horse.  It sounds so fun… unless (like is with a lot of old European traditions) if you are a naughty child.  You don’t get a bag of gifts.  You get put in a sack!

Questions and Answers

I just finished updating the About page here.

I’d say it’s a safe bet to no longer say that I am an expat in Germany… at least not always.  We’re more of a live-in-two-places kind of family now.  We have been since September.  It’s so exciting!

My next need-to-update is the Frequently Asked Questions page.  It’s ready for a lovely facelift.  But first – I wanted to ask for any suggestions.  Anything you’re curious about?  Anything you think others might be curious about?  Please leave your suggestions in the comments or send a tweet @makingthishome.  Hugs and handshakes all around!
