I bought a chalkboard speech bubble from a handmade shop a couple years ago. Sadly, they’re no longer in business. And also quite unfortunate, I never really knew what to do with the sign. Other than holding it up for a few fun photos, the sign always felt kind of incomplete. It looked like this:

A friend and I were talking. “I’m going to add a hook to the back and hang it on the wall,” I said.

“And paint it!” she burst.

We agreed that it needed a little color around the edge to finally give it that feeling I’ve been craving. So yesterday afternoon, that’s just what I did.

prepping paint job

First I put ScotchBlue™ Painter’s Tape along the sides. The corners were rough, but that was easy to fix.

make round corners for painting

First time this shot glass has been used! It fit the round curve I wanted, so I just traced it with a knife and pulled off the surplus tape.

prep for painting

If I were using a paint brush, I’d be through masking the chalkboard at this point. I’m using spray paint so the entire top surface needs to be covered.

A little tip we’ve picked up: Don’t try to put down tape and plastic at the same time. It’s much easier to focus on masking corners and edges how you want them first. Then use a second layer of tape for your plastic.

sanding 3m sandpaper

Fortunately this project didn’t need a lot of sanding. I went down to the hangar for a sponge sander. They’re cheap, and they’re our favorite tool for hand sanding. This one was originally labeled “coarse”, which feels about like 80 grit. I roughed up everything and wiped it down with a rag.

Then it was time to paint outside. There’s a scrap of wood under my chalkboard to lift it from the old wooden spool I’m painting on. Three thin coats later, I was done.

I’ll get a hook in town this afternoon, and we’ll have our first item ready to hang in this house. At last!
