The Story of Yesterday in Germany…
…was a success!

- Before she started chopping, the hairdresser asked me if I wanted to put my hair in a ponytail and cut that off to take home. The reason why some people do that was lost in translation. But she seemed pleased that I said, “No thank you.”
- When everything was finished, there was more hair on the floor than on my head. (Here’s a before shot.)
- I no longer have an American “pony” (or ponytail). But I do have a German one. “Pony” is bangs in German. (Good thing I looked that up before I walked into the salon!)
Try this: grab your journal. Write across the top of the page “the story of yesterday” and then keep going. What will you write?

Yay for bangs! The new haircut looks good! Hah I also think it’s odd that the German word for bangs is Pony. I mean I guess it makes sense, since ponies also have bangs…but it sure can lead to some miscommunication if you’re not aware of the false friend! :)
That’s funny that the hairdresser asked you about the ponytail to take home or not. Is it because she knew you’re American, or is it a German thing to ask? I’ve never been asked that before but when I first moved here I asked them to do it because I wanted to donate my hair to Locks of Love. They didn’t seem to think it was weird but my German wasn’t great back then and thankfully I had a hairdresser who could speak some English too in case of emergency. :)
Hey thanks, Sarah. I think the idea of keeping the hair might be a Berlin thing. Not totally sure!
Cute haircut — and I really like the bangs!
Love the haircut. Also, when I went really short, I cut my ponytail off and took it home to send in and donate to Locks of Love. If you cut off 10 inches or more of clean hair, it can be used to make wigs for little kids undergoing cancer treatment.
I’ve done that before, too, Jane! I thought that’s what the hairdresser meant at first; she didn’t. People actually KEEP the tails. !!
Looks great Katie! And here I am (at 47yrs old) trying to grow my hair out since getting it cut short 21 yrs. ago!
Love it! I recently chopped of a whole lotta hair and just wait til the first time you wash it!!! It is so strange and you will probably use way more product then needed. Enjoy the change!
Look at you all glamorous!
Back in the day, women who cut their hair short would keep the ponytail in case they wanted to have an updo for the night. The ponytail would be braided, coiled, and pinned to the back of your head. I’ve also seen them turned into ‘falls’, which are clip-on ponytails. Not so odd to me, but it could be a little weird if you aren’t used to being offered your own hair.
I know about “falls” and such from my mother, but when I cut my waist-length curly hair to above-chin length some years ago, no -one offered me my own hair! It did look like a poodle exploded on the floor around the cutting chair, though.. I’m growing it out to mid-back length again, of course ;) .
You new ‘do looks really good, and I think you’ll find it a lot more manageable than having long hair. It will also give your hair more body, as it looks fine and soft in your pictures.
Enjoy your stay in Germany, too! I wish I could go back to Berlin, where I and my better half stayed for about 10 days in 2011.
Wow! i had no idea, Eleanor. It certainly makes sense. Thanks for the bit of history.
It looks magnificent! Bangs are fabulous on you :)
