January Giveaway Day
As the cold of winter moves along, I find myself curling in a quilt with a mug of hot chocolate and my journal a bit more often. This is the season when I’m most conscious of words like soul and poems like ”January” by John Updike:
The days are short,
The sun a spark
Hung thin between
The dark and dark.
I think it’s because when the sun goes down for the night (and afternoon?!), I want to bed down myself. This month’s giveaway from two small business gals feels like a nice addition to this seasonal warmth I think we’re looking for within.

20€ gift certificate credit to Euroscents at Scentsy
Suzanne is an expat mom in Germany, and she had the same questions so many of us have had as expats: what kind of work can I do to help my family financially (and myself emotionally) in this new world? And where the heck can I find a sweet smelling candle to make my home smell like magic? That’s when she became a Scentsy independent consultant.

Pumpkin and cinnamon always take me back to when my mom and I used to spend weeks making cookies and sweets before the holidays. It was an economical way to give gifts to lots of people (including the mail man, the bus driver etc) and it became not only a great tradition for us, but our family and friends began expecting them. One older gentleman even told me that my oatmeal cookies tasted just like the ones his grandma made for him when he was a child :-)
I live in Germany now. This year for Christmas my husband bought a German holiday cookies cookbook so that I can learn to make traditional German cookies :-)
I remember fresh cinnamon rolls. My favorite!
As a teenager my mom and I started making hard candy for gifts. The smell of cinnamon always takes me back to those days – the cinnamon oil was the strongest of all the flavorings we used and would make your eyes water instantly. Ahh, the memories.
I’m in the US.
Chocolate Chip cookies baking in the oven remind me of my mom…she makes the best ones, and I haven’t been able to make any as good as hers!
Austria.
I can still smell the smells of baking Christmas cookies every year as my mom made it her mission to bake as many different kinds as she could to give away as presents. From the anise of springerle to the buttery goodness of spritz I can smell them every year as I recreate them in my own kitchen. Some things you just never shake or do I want to shake!!!!
Good old Iowa from the USA!!!!!
Hawaiian Tropic suntan lotion! The smell of the coconut takes me back to growing up on the beach!
Vanilla, reminds me of the summers spent in Great Grandmas kitchen making all her recipes of pies, breads, and treats for neighbors that she adored.
My favorite scent is Pepperment! When I was a kid, I loved eating candy canes and putting peppermint extract in my hot chocolate. One time when we were out of vanilla, I put peppermint extract in the orange julious that I was making – sadly, it was not as tasty as I had hoped for (ick!).
Happily living in Wyoming!
in Canada -
my mom’s fresh bread!
Strangely, the smell of fresh mowed grass reminds me of living in Utah when I was 6 years old. I say strangely because Utah is pretty arid compared to everywhere else I’d lived but perhaps that made the scent that much stronger.
A few of my favorite scents: laundry fresh off the line on a wintery day, the smell of the woods on a fall day, lemon zest, my antique rose- Ren de Victoria, gardenias, fir trees.
Oops, livin in Colorado, USA
I’m not a coffee drinker, but I love the smell of coffee. It reminds me of Grandma’s house and that is just a good feeling. I live in Idaho, USA
The smell of black coffee and chapstick always remind me of my dad.
growing up, I loved the smell of cinnamon in spiced cider and I live in the USA
Pipe tobacco, or cigars, always takes me back. Texas, USA
Vanilla, pumpkin and cinnamon remind me of my mom baking. Tennessee, USA
Lilacs! I love the scent of blooming lilacs on a gorgeous spring day! I love the way their scent fills the whole house when cut and brought inside! They are especially refreshing after a long midwest winter. Iowa, USA
I love the international giveaway concept! =)
One of the scents I used to wear in high school is still available from The Body Shop. Sometimes I dart in and take a whiff just to send me back to the early 90′s, even if just for a minute! =D

What a fun giveaway! Thanks!
Also, I’m in the US! And my favorite scent that takes me back is fresh cut grass! Reminds me of playing with my brother outside all summer long! :)
Lavender reminds me of summer’s spent at my great grandmother’s house. I’m in NC, USA.
bacon reminds me of when I was young because it was always my favorite special treat when I went to my Granny’s, and to this day, no one can make it like she can :) I’m in the USA! :D
Pineapples and brown sugar makes me think of when my grandma would make her pineapple upside down cake in a cast iron skillet. My mom has tried to recreate it but it just isn’t the same.
I live in the US.
My mom’s house always smelled like cinnamon! (USA!)
Birch twigs in the sauna in the middle of winter. Oh, and how my Grandmas old- fashioned waffle towels smelled like fresh air. I’m originally from Finland, currently live in the UK.
