This Beautiful World

Dear Friends,
I feel so grateful for your kindness as Martin and I made our announcement that we’re going to stay in the US and build a little home in the back of an airplane hangar. It sounds so weird to say that! A house in a hangar?
Is there some way I could invite you all over… perhaps for a little decluttering party?!
Yesterday, we had so much fun hiking and flying airplanes. (I’d take you deep into the mountains with some lemonade and your cars full of random hangar stuff.)
There is this little ghost town up a bumpy dirt road, and the lilacs were blooming everywhere. I’m sure most of you have had your lilacs come and go this year. I pulled out my Leatherman and cut a small bouquet to bring home.
Is that weird? I have my own Leatherman (giant pocketknife tool) that I carry in our car. My old 9 to 5 boss gave it to me for Christmas; all the other women got jewelry. I’ll never forget what he said. ”Katie, I know you, and you need this more.”
I wish only good moments to all of you.
And to our sweet nephew E, just born in Europe… welcome to this beautiful world.
xox
your mountain friend, Katie
p.s. I’m serious about the decluttering party. When are you free to stop by?

If you’re sending out invites to your readers only, um. . . if we all have been following your advice, we’re not the best audience. We would all be decluttering as well. But if it is to see your new habitation, I will happily come.

Actually, a house in a hangar doesn’t sound THAT weird. :)
I’m excited for you guys, you’ll love it!

Are you going to be around the last week of July and into early August? Damien and I are going to be in Montana, if you can believe it. (I think that’s where you live). If you’re serious about a decluttering gathering or just a “can we meet in person get together” I’d love to talk details.
I’ll e-mail you privately once Damien books our flight tickets this week.

haha – Emily, you’re awesome! And I’ll bet you probably saw this coming one day. :)

How exciting! Can’t wait to see how the new home emerges. Maybe there will be room for a garden (lilac bushes?) outside the hangar?

I am so excited for you both! How wonderful :) I wish I could join you for a decluttering party – there is nothing I love more than cleaning, organizing, and getting rid of stuff. Best wishes!

I was just at a ghost town in Montana a couple weekends ago. Crazy. Anyhow, best of luck on the new venture back stateside. For those of us with travel in our blood the idea of settling in always holds such a mixture of curiosity and longing as well as anxiety. I hope it will be both enjoyable and fulfilling for you both.

I’d love to help, except I don’t think that you’re within a few hours of Phoenix. How about if I do some more decluttering in our home at the same time.

I was a fan of these adventure books a while ago- I think the main character was Dirk-something. He lived in a hangar as well. I’m not sure they are your style, but when I read the announcement I pictured you joining Dirk-something on world adventures.
I can’t wait to see the pictures!

I would love to come over from New York for your decluttering party, but I am still a long way from getting my private pilot license, having only done just over six hours so far. Your learning to fly diary is a great encouragement. Thank you for that. You are also welcome to come and stay in the Catskills, though if you’re flying you would have to come to Oneonta or Albany, as there are no airports right in the mountains.

Thanks Ken! Happy flying to you in New York…

Oh Katie, I am so happy for you and Martin with this amazing adventure you are embarking on. I just got a job with the State!! YayI I did have much more free time before I started working. However…if any weekend helpers would be useful to you this summer, I would be happy to come help you out. I don’t think I’m too far away??
All my best wishes to you both. And isn’t it a beautiful summer thus far?

Congratulations on your latest adventure! A hangar house sounds awesome – I’m sure my flyin’ husband would love to live in one. At the University of Saskatchewan, we used to perform plays in an old converted hangar. It had one of the best theatre spaces I’ve seen, and our drama parties were called ‘Hangar Bangers.” So building a house in a hangar seems perfectly appropriate to me!
