Journaling the Weather
Today’s been just an incredible day around here. The blizzard is gone. The sun and frost are here.
Here’s a page from my {She} journal in the shop. It says:
09.Feb.2011 After days of blizzardy-weather, I went charging outside this morning. It’s 10* F in town right now, so I managed to walk around the house until my nose was numb and bright red. These days are my favorites in winter. They always have been. I used to eagerly wait for the sun to rise so I could see if the willows behind my childhood house had frost. Today, everything did. It still does! This is the February that I know and love.
For those of you who have asked about shoveling ourselves out of the house, we’re not using the front door for obvious reasons:

Just for a fun little comparison, here’s what it looks like sans snow.

Martin shovels around the back door on a regular basis so we can get in and out. I love that about him! Snow drifts love to snuggle up against the house.
I am a bit heavier footed than some of the other morning explorers. (I would guess these are coyote tracks that I just crossed.)

With a FROZEN nose, I was forced to turn back to the house far sooner than I wished.

But gosh it feels good to be outside and walking again.

So there you have it! I joke that the whole purpose behind Gadanke journals is to get away from journaling about the weather – my stereotype of boring journaling that can happen instead of capturing life and who we are. But weather can also carry memories and emotions with it. I’m trying to write conscious entries.
How’s the weather where you are? Are you embracing it? Maybe today’s a good day to try to journal about the weather… in a different way.

Hiya Katie!
I grew up in Melbourne, Australia, which is famous (in Australia, at least!) for 4-seasons a day. I was used to changing weather. We could have bushfire temperature and wind mornings, and 25 minutes later have flood producing cold rain. I did think, though, that people only spoke about the weather together because they weren’t sure what else to speak about. Then, I was living in Singapore, where the weather was absolutely constant all year round, being only 70 km from the Equator. I missed weather so much and I was often sad. And that helped me realise that weather really affects mood, and people speak about weather because it is so important to daily happiness. So, I am one who thinks and reads about weather every single day, and for me, it is a really great journalling topic!
I love your photos. Your tyre house world seems just gorgeously perfect. (Ach ya, I am sure there are lots of blah moments too, but there must be many moments of perfection with snow and blue sky like that!)
Greetings from way too early spring time in Geneva,
Ali

I recently returned from a cruise with my friends. The first day gone the weather back home was -30 degrees. The second week my brother and his girlfriend who were staying at my house were snowed in for two days and could not return home to NYC.
It is so cold here in the U.S. and snowing every other day.
My first day home I was grateful we could get home but I couldn’t warm up and wanted my puppies and cats and MY bed.
I’ve figured out I am a beach person more these days.

:) It was SO cold today. Started out in the minus column and never got above 13 degrees. But the sky was so blue. And it didn’t snow. And the sun was out. So I will not complain. The past couple of days I have been shoveling enormous amounts of snow, so today was very nice. It is supposed to be into the 30′s in the next few days and that will be very nice indeed!
Frosty trees are my favorite sight! And most of the tracks around our house are bunny tracks! It makes me smile after a good snow, it looks like the rabbits have been having a big party in front of our house. And a couple of weeks ago our neighbor pointed out to my husband some mountain lion tracks going down our road. Gulp! Hope I don’t come across one of those guys on one of my walks.
