Giving Month Challenge I : Visiting Neighbors
I love February because it is such a month of giving. My mom always taught us that Valentine’s Day isn’t about couples. It’s about extending signs of affection to the people around us. All of February is about extending that love.
No doubt you’ve caught on to something: I’m sort of obsessed with challenging myself. And just as often, I like to challenge you just a bit, too. ”Hi. My name is Katie, and I’m totally addicted to personal development challenges. I will bet a package of fruit snacks that I can do it…”
Let’s scratch that whole fruit snack thing. This month it should be all about those little boxes of candy hearts. You know the ones. I’ll try again…
“Hi. I’m Katie, and I’m totally addicted to shooting personal challenges to everyone at Making This Home.”

Each year, I always start thinking about how I can reach out to others with little gifts throughout February. It’s something I love… and I’m hoping you’d love to do it too because guess what. Each Friday of this month, you and I and all the readers of Making This Home are going to team up with a common goal. That goal is to give.
Make all you can, save all you can, give all you can. - John Wesley

This weekend’s challenge:
drop by the neighbor’s house with food.
People always say that food is the way to a man’s heart. The truth is that it’s the way to anyone’s heart. It gives you a reason to not just be neighbors, but for a brief moment, you become a part of one another’s lives.
When words have become impossible when we lived in Germany, homemade European cookies bridged the gap with a traditional neighbor. American jerky and candy bars bridged another not-so-traditional gap. The act of sharing can be so much more powerful than words. It certainly means more than waving from the car or saying hello at the mailboxes to all our neighbors.
So drop by a neighbor’s house with a treat. Bring a jar of something you canned. Bring something from the grocery store or handmade.
I’m counting on you to do this! Imagine if all of us – all around the world – took a moment from our week to extend that kindness. Imagine the influence of those brief moments. Imagine the joy.

Some favorites that we like to visit neighbors with:
- low-sugar muffins
- the world’s greatest American chocolate chip cookies
- Czech cookies
- German Lebkuchen
- fresh bread
- chocolates (one neighbor is a sucker for Hershey’s Kisses)
- local honey or organic jam
- junk food (there’s no way those bachelor neighbors around us would go for organic anything)
- ice cream in the summer
- a slice of pumpkin pie
- banana bread
- homemade marshmallows (because how many people have tried those?)
- a package of tea
So what will you give this weekend?
I hope you share your plans in the comments. I hope you come back and tell us what you did! I promise I will do the same.
**Let’s see how many people we can get to participate! Can we top the comments left in the last post with this challenge?**
My heart is so full just thinking about the goodness we can offer.

Excellent post! In fact, I’m writing about a very similar topic today on Simple Bites. Do drop by and answer my Q&A. So happy you enjoyed the muffins!

I live in an apartment building and sometimes get very frustrated with my neighbors and their noisy friends. I am entering into a chocolate festival today and will have extra cupcakes. I think that I will bring my neighbors some cupcake to show my kindness.
Katie, I am super excited for your Friday challenges. I can’t wait to hear what is next!

Great idea! I’ve been sick for 2 weeks and have recently experienced the kindness of my neighbors who have brought me treats or helped watch my boys during my illness. I’m finally well enough to make cookies and look forward to paying my neighbors’ thoughtfulness back a bit with some baked treats.

Oh, this is a great idea! I’m in!

I’m pretty sure our neighbor is a drug dealer…so would it count if I dropped by his house with the cops? Lol:) As you can see, I’m gonna have to brainstorm on this idea!

Oh I love this idea! My neighbors on one side have three little kids and the husband travels a lot – I’m sure the mom would appreciate a visit, or at least a favor or maybe a pizza delivery voucher, hahaha! My neighbor on the other side has gluten and dairy allergies so I’d have to get creative…

Oh my gosh, Katie, I just did this yesterday. I was getting ready to bake cookies, but I was short one egg. I decided to try the recipe anyway. I got everything out and I was chopping hazelnuts on the kitchen counter when I saw my neighbor waving his arms at me from his yard. Through the window I heard him shouting, “Hey! Would you like some fresh eggs?” He’s been keeping chickens for maybe six months now and we have watched them grow up from adorable little chickens to beautiful adult hens. I ran out and met my neighbor in the driveway and he handed over nine gorgeous eggs, two green-blue, one white, and six brown. I told him about the cookies, and when they were done, I brought over a dozen, fresh out of the oven and melty with chocolate chips. His partner answered the door and I handed her the cookies. It was the first time we’d ever spoken face to face instead of over the fence. She said they are getting four eggs a day, so they’ll be glad to give us more anytime!
Lest anyone think this sounds idyllic and rural, we live in a suburb of a slightly gritty urban area, so the chickens are as unusual here as anywhere else that isn’t country. :)

I just discovered your site. I was looking up places to donate unused contact lenses of all things. I happy to stumble across this site. I Love to give also. As a baby gift to a neighbor, I gifted them a year of dinners on Thursdays. It was a simple gift to give, I just cooked more but that tired new mom was over joyed knowing she did not have to think what to make one night a week. As the year went on I think she was even more over joyed with her gift. It brought our families together in a way that has enriched both of our lives. I do believe that someday that mom will pay that gift forward. Giving brings joy and that joy brings happier people. Happier people are more tolerant of others. That equals peace! Keep up you good work inspiring others!

Andrea – maybe they would like some brownies. ?!

We’ll take the challenge. We’re actually cooking and serving at the City of Refuge tomorrow night (a local community food kitchen) but you are right – people don’t think of their next door neighbor as much now a days.

I LOVE this! While I didn’t read it earlier, I did do something to this effect yesterday! For my birthday, I asked in advance that friends and family who usually buy me gifts would instead donate some food items for me to pass along to a struggling family. …yesterday, I pulled up to their house with 26 stuffed bags of non-perishables and 2 large boxes for the freezer. It was my best birthday ever!! They were so appreciative and grateful, the whole family. (I say this NOT to boast, it wasn’t about me, but mostly donated by my family/friends and just about giving. Hopefully though it might spark an idea for someone else!) Seriously, the best feeling EVER! :) I love your quote, too.

I was raised with this idea :-). It is really normal in my part of the world to cook and share. Since I live I a hhouse full of older people and adore to bake they get at least once a week a cake. One for me a nd one for neighbors. I usually give only thin´gs I made by myself. Like cake, any warm meal etc.
Pattie you are a great woman and you made an amazing gift to your next one!
