Making Handmade Ornaments with Fabric
I keep a little fabric basket of all my ornaments close at hand.

Very few of the ornaments I’ve been making this month are actually finished. (My goal is 30 handmade ornaments for many sentimental reasons.) It’s easier to do everything in stages – sew a bunch of ornaments as the ideas come, then turn the ornaments right side out (I sew them inside out), and later stuff them with scraps of quilt batting while chatting with guests or listening to podcasts.
I think that these three are my favorites. I drew the snowflake and word “joy” on pieces of fabric with a pencil. Then I used a tight zigzag stitch on my sewing machine to draw out the designs.
The hand sewing awaits. After the ornaments are stuffed, there’s a little gap to sew shut. I’m slowly teaching myself to enjoy the simplicity and comfort of hand sewing. For as much as I try to simplify, there is still this rush rush in me about sewing. A machine is so much faster (and so much better!) than my hand sewing.
If anything, this ornament project is teaching me grace.
See all those gaps with batting that is peeking out when I turn the basket around? The current count stands at about 20 almost-finished-ornaments. 10 ornaments + much hand sewing to go.
What’s your favorite handmade ornament for hanging on the tree?

My favorite homemade ornament on the tree is a styrofoam snowman wearing a hat. It’s held together with many sequins and pins. My husband’s favorite are the little felt critters his grandma made long long ago.

I think I’m weird, but I do enjoy hand sewing. In fact, Thursday night after we got home from our Thanksgiving celebrations, we watched a movie. While watching, I sewed a length of satin ribbon onto a towel that had started fraying. (I don’t know why, either, it was only a year old!) I didn’t want the fraying to continue, so I sewed the ribbon over that area. The ribbon does not run down one complete side, and does sort of stick out, but it looks 1000% better than a slowly self-destructing towel!
It is very soothing to sit and stitch. I need to pick up my counted cross-stitch again, too.

I love them – great idea! I love the leather ornaments my parents made when I was a wee lil thing!

My favorite handmade ornaments are preschool made gifts from my children. Their teacher does the same craft/gift with them each year. It’s half of a walnut shell stuffed with a bit of cotton ball and a tiny plastic baby glued on the cotton to look like baby Jesus in the manger. She hot glued a bit of red ribbon on the back for a hanger.
The kids and I made salt dough ornaments this year as my sewing skills are almost nil. We used the recipe that was posted on The Simple Dollar.

I love the hearts on our tree – wooden hearts painted red, red and white woven paper hearts, and the hearts made from my mother’s hand made lace.

These are all gorgeous but I think my favourite would have to be the stripey star. It reminds me of a baby in a festive babygro for some reason! I’ve making some handmade ones this year too.
Thank you for your kind words about the new retreat – so exciting. If your plans change it would be fab to have you join us!
