Owl Sugar Shaker & Friend
These little guys came home with me last week when I went to town for groceries.

They were on clearance at Pier One – I suspect because they are supposed to be salt and pepper shakers. The holes are so big that I’d call them salt and pepper dumpers. Which is just perfect. I needed a little sugar bowl/sugar shaker to keep on hand for tea and quick recipes. That takes care of one bird. Any ideas on the other little guy? He’s just hanging out at my desk for now, enjoying the easy life.
Anyone relate to a need for a sugar container other than the large one used for baking? What do you use?
And for a quick flashback, here’s our simple trick for storing salts.

In the same line of thinking – I like to keep a shaker of cinnamon-sugar at the ready too. If you got them mixed up it wouldn’t be so bad either!

What about baking soda for when you clean? I use an old Parmesan cheese container for “cleaning” baking soda–much sturdier than the cardboard box! (Baking soda for cooking it in a different spot, still in the box) Your new little friend could sit in the kitchen, ready to scour the sink, counters, stovetop, etc.
Hope this helps!

Olive oil for cooking/sauteing!

I could use a sugar shaker too, and I’d especially like a powdered sugar shaker, for topping off cakes and other baked goodies. I love Vicki’s idea of a cinnamon-sugar mix, and I could even go for plain cinnamon!

I have a big shaker that was supposed to be used for Parmesan cheese, but I don’t use powdered/pre-grated Parmesan. So I filled it up with sesame seeds instead, and my husband and I use it all the time (we love garnishing with the seeds – they add a nice texture to just about anything!). It’s really handy for garnishing. If you frequently use things like flax seed, hemp seed, poppy seed, oregano flakes, or anything that you want easily on-hand but needs a large-hole shaker, this could do the trick.

Coarse sea salt? I use it way more than regular salt, but I keep mine in a sugar bowl. Hehe. :)

Y’know I would very carefully drill one large hole in the top of the extra bird, and use him as a toothbrush holder. He’d be great by the sink. OR, I’d put cinnamon in him and jazz up coffee and toast!! The baking soda idea from another commenter is great, too, a sprinkle of that and a swipe with a damp microfiber and you are golden.

I’d say either a cinn/sugar mix or just cinnamon. Or even cocoa :)

I use a little sugar bowl, because I definitely didn’t want to lug down my huge sugar storage bin every time I needed a dash. But these guys are even cuter!

How about some potpourri??

Give one to your sister and then when you’re apart you’ll both be using your birdy friends. A friend and I have matching mugs. Even though we live hours apart we like having coffee together.

oh you guys are brilliant!
Rose, I had to do a double take at your comment to make sure it WASN’T my sister making that suggestion. :)
I’ll keep you posted on what we do. Fortunately there’s not much for humidity, so anything is doable.

Keep him on your desk with some nice-smelling stuff in him. He’s a good reminder to be wise.

How about threading some fishing line through the holes and
hanging him from your holiday tree? Or put him on the table now
amongst some greenery and pineconnes or acorns?

I have an adorable mouse that sits in my frig with baking soda in her. She is handpainted and she is holding a bouqet of flowers in her hands. she makes me smile everytime i open my frig door. Not sure what her real purpose is but she had 4 large hole in her back so i made her my frig mouse! She is too pretty to only hang out in the frig.
