Catch and Release : Fears, Fish, and Sugar Cookies
This is my little sister. She has a secret wish and an enormous talent.

She makes the most amazing and beautiful cakes and cookies (like her own wedding cake!). Then she goes and teaches people in her community how to do the same. Then – my gosh – people just fall in love with her sincere heart.
She secretly wants to make cake + cookie making and teaching her career.
There are so many questions in her mind. Can I really do this? Will people love this? Where do I start? Those are huge, fearful doubts that we all have. As women, it is SO EASY to put our hearts and passion aside in an effort to please and take care of everyone else.
Fears come splashing and banging into the room. And if we’re not careful, we let them win. We take the easy swim.

But my sister and I decided we’re not going to let them win. She’s my biggest Gadanke cheerleader. And I want to be exactly the same for her because that’s what sisters do. It doesn’t matter how many miles apart we might be (usually in the thousands) – we can fight those fears that say we’re not good enough. We all can.
So this weekend, we released our fears.

We were filled with hesitations. But we let them all go.

Okay – maybe it didn’t quite go like that. The fish cookie actually jumped out of my sister’s hand and right into the lake where it proceeded to “swim” away. Maybe it was trying to tell us something.
Can you all do me a favor? Will you help me cheer for this special young woman? She and her husband are moving from their college town to take on “the real world”. It’s my best friend, and I just want to help her follow her heart as YOU have helped me to do. What are some fresh-out-of-college, follow-your-heart bits of wisdom you can share?
Don’t forget… you’ve got to try these homemade marshmallows and graham crackers my sister and I made last year. She brought them to the lake this year and oh-my-gosh!
And wowzers – here’s a flickr collection of just some of her sweet projects.

My son says “those are the best cakes I’ve ever seen. They look so tasty, I could eat a whole one up in a day” (he’s 7) This was a completely un-prompted comment from him, so I wanted to share it with you. He just happened to walk by as I was checking out the pictures. Your sister is incredibly talented. Best wishes to her on her venture!!

A very successful cookie/cupcake company is expanding here in Calgary. They sell cupcakes like the ones your mom might have made – buttercream icing and a wild variety of colors and flavors. Many professionals pay top dollar for them, as they don’t have the time or inclination to make their own. If you google ‘crave cupcake .ca’ you can show your sister what they do. Good luck to her – I am sure there is a market for what she wants to sell!

Those cookies and cakes look so luscious! Follow your dreams, lady! There will be fear and uncertainty no matter what path you choose, but if you go your own way you have the satisfaction of knowing you gave it a shot. Life’s too short — and that little fish cookie is too brave and beautiful to be shoved away into the dark cubby of “maybe someday.” At least try. And check out all your local resources for bakers, cooks, teachers, volunteers, and small business owners. ;)

Seriously, believe in yourself! You CAN do this! I am sure you will succeed! Educate yourself on what starting this kind of business will take, then get as much experience as you can, and dream BIG!!!

What a small world! I don’t know how long ago I started reading your blog or how I even found it…but today when going through my reader I saw a familiar face! I went to church with your sister in M- and have seen her delightful face at Michael’s showing off her cake skills! Enjoy your time in America!!

The wonderful thing about being fresh out of college is that the whole world is open to you. You can decide where to go and what to do without the ties that bind you later (house, kids, etc). It can be a bit intimidating because, before this stage, life always had a next step ready and waiting for you. Now life flings open the door and says, Here you go! Take the path you choose! And the wonderful thing about being young is that you have the whole of life before you. You can give this a try and if it works out great! and if not, oh well, try something else. Go and try!

Just a few pieces of “post college” advice: :-)
*Experience IS a good teacher. Listen to others but know that they aren’t always right. (And if they ARE right and you do it wrong, not only have you learned a good lesson, you’ve got a great story to tell later!)
*Follow your heart. Doing what you love will not only make you happy, it’s one of the surest ways to succeed that I know.
*Try it all — once. Youth is fleeting and you never know if you’ll get the chance again. Instead of saying, “I wish I’d done that” think of all the great stories you’ll collect along the way.
