Berlin Flea Market Find
I am constantly battling between wanting to add cute details to our home and wanting to edit and avoid clutter. You probably know exactly what I mean. My conscious, otherwise known as he don’t-make-clutter cricket on my left shoulder, usually wins out. I think he whispers, “Do your realllly need that, Katie?”
“No,” I answer, putting down the new treasure. ”I don’t need it.”
But sometimes, every so often, I find something that I am absolutely drawn to. The cricket starts chirping. ”Ohh, Katie…” And I just don’t know if I want to listen. Like with this flea market find:

It’s made in Germany and has a little chip in the hand. I paid 2.10 euro. Then the dish proceeded to sit on the windowsill for three weeks. That cricket on my shoulder had a hay day. ”See, Katie,” it kept saying. ”Now what are you going to do with that?”
I find that seeing an item every day and out of place helps me create good ideas for how I can use it. Obviously, if no ideas come, it’s time to pass the item on.
It was a close call for this little guy… until I decided how I wanted to approach the next chapter of the No New Clothes Challenge at our house. As you know, we’re not buying clothes. We pretty much stopped in May. A few pairs of handmade earrings seemed like just the ticket. And as it turns out, this container is perfect.

I couldn’t be more pleased with my first flea market purchase. Even managed to bargain in German for it with the help of a friend.
What’s something you recently purchased? Do you ever ignore that “you don’t NEED this” bug? I think it’s a balance between finding what you love and passing on what you don’t. Is this something you struggle with or think about? And how do you decide?

Oh I bought a lamp last year that still doesn’t have a home. It’s really cute, but just doesn’t ‘fit’ anywhere. Just looking at it makes me feel guilty! I keep thinking it’s going to have a home…but I would have to buy two more things to give it that special spot, so guess what? I just feel guilty =P

I do this to an extent. My style of decorating involves more knickknacks that yours ;), but even I have to edit sometimes. Every so often, I go through the house and pack up what I’m not still crazy about. I leave what I gather in the box until it’s time for me to have a yard sale. If I can take the item out of the box and price it no problem, I know it’s time for it to go. But if I find myself wanting to hang on to it, I find it a new home in my house.

I’ve worked hard to curb my consumer urges and I’m usually pretty good. I find the problem is with all the gifts we receive from loving family members! They are all so generous, particularly towards our three-year-old. At first, I’d just donate gifts that we didn’t need, but now my daughter is more aware of the gifts and it’s becoming a negotiation!

This weekend I won one and I lost one. I won the struggle and did not purchase a cute metal plant pot ($6) that I wanted to make a fabric liner for and use for a desktop trash receptacle. But the color wasn’t quite right and that meant I wouldn’t be happy with it until it was painted. I didn’t have metal paint for it so I put it back.
But I did purchase three very cute hooks that even have the metal holders to add a label ($3 each). Can’t decide where I want to use them. But it seems like hooks are always useful. Not sure if I shudda…

In an effort to save money and to be a bit more “green”, I definitely think more carefully about what I buy. I still enjoy window shopping and the occasional purchase, but I try not to buy so much “stuff”. I try to buy things I’ll use or really enjoy. I think your flea market find is lovely and what a great use for it. I definitely agree about finding a balance.

To be honest, I normally find a way to justify something I really want – if I can afford it! Ha! Love the use you came up with for that darling piece of pottery!
(still no baby…TOMORROW baby!)

A few thoughts:
First, that is a really cute dish and a great idea for using it.
Second, remember that there is a difference between not wanting clutter and not having anything. As far as I am concerned, the occasional “I bought it just because I wanted it” purchase is fine, especially if it costs 2 euros.
I bought a pair of black heels that I really can’t say that I needed. I have other black shoes and I am very tall, with no need for added height. I don’t have that much occasion for wearing them, but my husband really likes the way I look in them and that makes them worthwhile for me. They make our special occasions a little more special.

I used to have the hardest time saying no!!! Part of the problem was that I never really knew what I liked. Once I started figuring out what I like and editing the rest, it’s been a lot easier to say no when something draws me. I still have a hard time with dishes and bowls, though. Apparently I love ALL dishes and bowls. Taking my husband along helps. He has no interest in ‘frills’ so he keeps me moving along :)

this is adorable – unique & small – so it won’t take up a lot of your precious space.
Is it large enough to hold a small potted plant? a floating flower? small decorations at Christmas (if you celebrate that holiday)? a small serving bowl for salsa?
It’s a “keeper”

I have very definite tastes, and I’m starting to realize that I am often drawn to objects that are similar to something I already own. If I realize that during the “should I or shouldn’t I” stage, it helps me to say “no, I already have something like that.” So now I’m trying to ask “do I have anything like this?” as part of my conscious decision-making process.
