Going Home Again
One month until we’re moving back to Berlin. I can’t decide if I am excited or sad. I am so in love with the mountains and the deer. I love flying. I love the ability to see family and old friends on a regular basis in America.
But I also really, really love Berlin. My German skills (which aren’t much!) will be so rusty. I wonder if I will understand anyone. I wonder if I will eat too many croissants on our first day back. So many things to wonder.
And so many things to do between now and then. So very many things.
If you had to leave home for a new country, what is the one thing you’d absolutely take with you?

One thing huh… I guess I would have to say my computer. It holds all my pictures, my memories. It would also be my gateway to communicate with family and friends. I would miss them terribly.

I have no idea what I’d take, because I’m exactly sure what I’d miss. My guess, though, is food. I’m not sure how much of that I could bring, but I have this image of a suitcase crammed full of brown sugar, salt & vinegar chips, and blackberry jam. I do love blackberry jam.

HMM! WOW! How to conclude what to take, what are the necessities, what out ways the other, etc. I myself am a keeper of many things & cherish many things & if I were to leave home for a long distance I would really have to weigh this myself too:) I am a firm believer of ‘Family’ so I guess I would make sure I have something which holds some of those memories for me to view sometimes to make me happy. The biggest thing bein the computer as that stores for us, but also a Gr8 way of communicating too. Also, any memory books, scrapbooks, etc sometimes will hold that special touch that was applied with them because of the ‘memories’ you had when creating them. Wishin you much luck in all of your decions. Take care & Good Luck:)

Other than the obvious family and money, I think I’d take pictures…or my camera, or clothes, or…I feel sorry for you! :)

My computer and stuffed bunny, Thumper gave me. As far as clothes I always pack light. To take our dog is a problem he would have to go through at least 6 weeks and then the same when we return. So he stays with my parents along with our cats.
I do take some food. Cheeses- horseradish and pepper jack, beef jerky and anything to spice up German food!!! lol
I love spicy and German spicy doesn’t cut it for me. I am have Mexican/Italian. I do like the Turkish red pepper flakes. They are the best. Now you are making me homesick for Stuttgart. I love the yogurt sauces and our favorite Ethiopian Restaurant.
We should be home during Christmas and I will let you know. Save travels ~

Just think of the tasy german pretzels you can eat when you get back to Berlin! :-) I would be sure to take my laptop, I am often skyping with friends and family at home in the States!

Thanks for the link, jja!
It’s tough to think of what I truly NEED versus WANT. I guess it all comes down to want… so how many suitcases full of wants can I haul? Hmm…

Amber, I love your thought. It’s so true.
When we left Germany, I made this list of all these things that I thought I just had to have from the US. Now that we’re in the US, I find I don’t even use those things here. I got so used to not having them.
