A Simple Workspace
I’ve been promising you a few behind-the-scenes looks at our house ever since I took you on our official Tire House Tour. And because you’ve been so very patient, I thought we’d start at my desk – you know, the very place where the blogging action happens.
It isn’t much. But I’ve learned that sometimes the most enjoyable places really are the simplest. They’re easier to clean, and it’s so much easier to clear my mind without all the distractions I might otherwise want to decorate my desk with.
Martin and I bought the entire set from Target for around $300 a few years ago. That’s the desk, chair, and filing cabinet that also serves as a sewing machine table. If I have time at the end of the day, I like to swap out the computer for the sewing machine. Keeping my desk simple is the only way I can alter its purpose. (You can see how we’ve made Martin’s desk in Germany a multi-purpose space in our living room right here.)
Our desks are the only pieces of furniture in the Tire House that belong to us. One day – when I know my chair will be used by someone more than it is stored – I would love to reupholster it with a bright patterned fabric that suits me more. With thoughts of dust, I don’t. Part of making this home is learning to make do.
Luckily, I sort of found something else to look at – a view that goes on forever.
What are your thoughts on creating a work space of your own? Is it simple, beautiful, or maybe just completely un-functional?

I love seeing this desk Katie – and what a view! I think the chair re upholstery is a great idea! I’d love a little white desk all my own. With pretty holders on it for paper, pens and my laptop. Alas, I make do with a behemoth of a desk from Ikea. It’s matt-sized. He’s 6’4. :)

I currently use our foot stool in front of our sofa for my laptop… highly unfunctional but I have a comfy seat!

It’s a nice desk, simple lines. I use my husband’s desk which is a complete mess. Papers and books stacked 6 inches deep. I’m on the lookout for a small writing desk I can have all to myself.

I love the light in your office!
The thing I miss with my desk are drawers where the keyboard is. So I have some unusual containers for my pens, push pins, paper clips, etc.

Love, love, love your desk. Ours is a small antique kitchen table and it doesn’t fit much of anything but the monitor and keyboard. I would love to have room like yours just to have a basket for bills and a picture frame…

currently mine is the comfy chaise lounge section of the couch!
soon I’ll be setting up our extra room for my own office, but that’s a few week’s out from now!

Our computer desk is actually a sewing machine, the sewing machine folds down inside when not being used which is the perfect size to hold a laptop, phone & calculator. It also has three little drawers to hold our pens, phone book & ect.

I thought of you today when I saw this: http://montesilo.blogspot.com/
I love it! It’s a silo turned into a house.

You have a great space here. The view alone is so beautiful and inspiring. Happy blogging!

I love that you use your sewing desk for your computer, too, Steph. I’m all about the multi-purposing.
The couch works really well, too, doesn’t it, all?!

My husband and I were just talking last night about simplifying our lives. Getting ride of things that cause us stress that we don’t need and going with the basics.
