Inspired Giveaway: Talking Plain, Not Airplane
Are the chemicals slowly disappearing in your house, too? One of the first to go around here was the stuff we were putting on our bodies like harsh soaps and nasty shampoos. We were happy with Avalon Organics. Then when I thought my skin couldn’t be happier and I would never truly be able to pronounce all the ingredients, Plain Jane Skin Care gracefully waltzed into our lives thanks to a fabulous friend.
I honestly didn’t know body products could work so well and have so few basic ingredients in them. Love it!
And one lucky Making This Home reader is sure to fall in love, too. Plain Jane is offering a fabulous gift package that I so desperately wish I could win. Just look at all this simple, natural stuff:
The prize, valued at 30 smackaroos, includes:
Plain Jane is only available online unless you’re in the Atlanta area. You’ve got to love the green, small business movement in action. With soy candles, natural bug repellants, and products especially for babies and kids, you’ll just want to eat all the yumminess right up. (Luckily you can thanks to the short sweet list of ingredients Plain Jane uses.)
The prize:
One winner in the United States or Canada will receive all of the Plain Jane products mentioned above valued at $30.
How to enter:
Leave a comment below (one entry per household) that describes the part of your morning routine that you struggle with most (or skip!), especially in the beauty department.

I had a large collection of cosmetics and toiletries products as well. But now we get some great compact all in one kits for this.
July 2nd, 2009 at 4:15 am
I struggle with my hair style every day…it has a mind of its own! I use natural shampoo and conditioner, but have not found a natural volumizing mousse to use yet (my hair is super flat without it). Any suggestions?
July 2nd, 2009 at 5:24 am
I struggle with getting up early enough to shower in the morning. I really value my sleep and can be pretty cranky when I don’t get enough, so I hate those nights where I stupidly stay up after my usual bedtime and then have to wake up early to shower. I really should switch to showering at night, but I hate blow drying my hair and hate going to bed with wet hair.
July 2nd, 2009 at 5:38 am
Okay, this may sound funny but I struggle with shaving my legs. I like to sleep in and then that leaves me with little time… Thank goodness for dress pants! Teehee…
July 2nd, 2009 at 6:08 am
not to sound like a broken record, but I also struggle with getting up early! Luck for me, I have a job where it’s better that I don’t spend time on hair and makeup. I work in a kitchen, so I have a hat on all day, and any makeup would melt right off! I prefer to shower at night, and I get the added bonus of being relaxed before bedtime.
July 2nd, 2009 at 6:12 am
This is a fabulous giveaway!
July 2nd, 2009 at 6:15 am
What a wonderful way to enjoy great products!
July 2nd, 2009 at 6:22 am
I must was my face every morning because it gets a nice coat of grease like I am working in a car shop. I am currently looking for a more natural facial cleanser, so if I win this would be great to try! Oh boy, I hope I win!!!
July 2nd, 2009 at 6:31 am
My wife has always worn eyeliner, that is until it started to make her eyes super red. She has tried several different brands and even wash the brush? after every use but after a few weeks, her red eyes come back. About 4 months ago sue decided to stop wearing the stuff all together and her eyes are doing great! I know she would love to try some chemical free soaps now too! Thanks for your blog.
Ps, I have 9 hours so far :)
July 2nd, 2009 at 6:35 am
I’m in my 40′s and have skin like I was in my teens (I never brock out in my teens though) – I would love to find something that I can use on my face that doesn’t make me breakout!
July 2nd, 2009 at 6:54 am
Makeup. I normally skip it altogether these days! What a great giveaway Katie!
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:04 am
Washing my hair – I don’t skip it though. It’s hard to find a good shampoo/conditioner combo.
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:07 am
Chemicals or green, the component we all seem to lack is time! I often don’t do a thing to my hair after showering, which can result in flat with odd flips, but hey… I invest in a good haircut specifically so I don’t have to style it when I don’t want to bother.
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:18 am
Hair drying!! The kiddos usually won’t sit still long enough for me to actually dry my hair!
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:24 am
I have so little time in the mornings, and the time I do have is often spent with a child tugging on my leg and crying. So I’ve skipped it all at some point or another. Right now it’s getting the shower in when I want it that’s just NOT HAPPENING. Hopefully soon that will change.
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:35 am
I’ve been skipping my makeup routine lately and with summer here I’ve been skipping the hairdryer.
Thanks for hosting this great giveaway.
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:35 am
I struggle with fixing my hair. My hair is thin and breaks easily therefore I don’t blow dry it often. I am forced to let it be natural. I have to be really creative sometimes. But on days I have to work and don’t have time to wait for it to dry I am thankful my uniform includes a baseball cap I can wear.
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:38 am
I struggle with my leg hair. I don’t like to shave my legs but it is summertime!! I’m with you Erin Kathleen!
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:43 am
While on summer break, I skip a lot of steps in the morning and then stumble into the bathroom later in the day… though I’m only slightly embarassed to say that several days in the last two weeks my husband has come home from work to me still in my pajamas…
So, if I won I’d use all the products as encouragement to get up and be beautiful!
During the school year, I struggle with time like everyone else (time for shower, time for makeup, time for hair, etc).
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:52 am
I really struggle with morning cleansing and putting on a daily sunscreen. I take showers at night, so I forget to do this alot!
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:59 am
Sadly I can’t remember the last time I used my curling iron or hair dryer….it’s a ponytail everyday these days.
July 2nd, 2009 at 8:01 am
That is one great giveaway there! My most hated element is my hair. I like doing makeup so that is rather consistent, but hair is so much work – I never feel like I look nice unless it’s blow dried and straightened, but that is just… so much time.
July 2nd, 2009 at 8:05 am
This might sound funny, and it is indirectly part of my beauty routine – I struggle with drinking water first thing in the morning! I have been trying to add “drink a full glass of water” to my early morning routine, but it’s been a difficult one to integrate.
This is a wonderful giveaway, thanks!
July 2nd, 2009 at 8:05 am
I would like to be able to use foundation. I stopped using main stream cosmetics years ago when I found out what was in them, and have not been able to find a natural foundation (whether it be powder, liquid, or cream) that doesn’t cake and look un-natural. As a result my entire make-up routine is disgraceful – and most of the time I skip it altogether.
July 2nd, 2009 at 8:16 am
I am not a morning person at all and am a minimalist when it comes to hair and make-up. I HATE styling my hair and usually end up showering at night and going to bed with wet hair!
July 2nd, 2009 at 8:19 am
I struggle with just about everything to do with waking up :) I skip makeup 99% of the time. I try to shave and bathe in the evenings for many reasons! I use to struggle with what to use to keep my face clean but I absolutely love the plainjane shampoo bar for my face. I still forget to do it but when I don’t my face is less dry and less red. I have super sensitive skin that tends to dry out. I add a little of the soap to a soap foamer container so I don’t need to waste time lathering up! My son loves it in his hair, but I like it for my skin. I even shave with it. This is not meant to be an ad but I am so happy to have found something that works for us that is natural and saves us time because it can be used for so many things!! Less bottles, less time, plus healthier skin! So, in my opinion, this is the best giveaway anyone could win.
July 2nd, 2009 at 8:41 am
I skip drying my hair – the hairdryer turns my curly locks into a crazy mess! (Also, I have no patience for the hairdryer).
What a great giveaway – I’ve been trying to find ways to switch to more organic/natural beauty supplies, and this would be a great start!
July 2nd, 2009 at 8:46 am
I rarely remember to put on lipstick. I don’t know why because I actually like my lips…but somedays, I’ll get in the car to go home and realize I never put it on. Ha!
July 2nd, 2009 at 9:16 am
I usually wake up sooo late that I leave little time for anything but a quick shower and a sip of coffee. Most days I put my makeup on in the car on my way to work…redlights for mascara! These products really are great..so, even if I don’t win, I will just order from the website:)
July 2nd, 2009 at 9:18 am
The more simple the better once you have kids, after I remember to wash my face at some point in the day or in the the shower at night I put on my “argan oil” on my face & hair as a leave in condtioner. I’d love to try some more affordable organic products. I remember reading somewhere that you should never put something on your skin that you can’t eat because it absorbs right into your blood stream, I always try to remeber that when shopping. Great giveaway I hope I win, I hope I win:-)
July 2nd, 2009 at 9:25 am
Wow, that’s a great give-a-way.
For me, it’s eating breakfast, but I can’t do without, so I’ve started taking smoothies to go or a bowl of dry cereal and picking at it at work.
July 2nd, 2009 at 9:53 am
I have no idea how to use eyeliner. I like the way it looks on other people, but I end up looking like a little girl playing dress up! I usually just skip eye makeup altogther is the mornings. Now that there are some natural eye products out there, I might give learning another whirl!
July 2nd, 2009 at 10:24 am
I’m with the other ladies who struggle with shaving. When I’m trying to get ready quickly smooth legs drops to the bottom of the priority list. I do have blond leg hair so it’s not obvious, but it’s an impressive week if I shave more than once!
July 2nd, 2009 at 10:33 am
Cool stuff!
No beauty routines to speak of. I keep it very simple. But I do struggle to keep motivated to exercise every morning.
July 2nd, 2009 at 12:46 pm
I have had a hard time trying to find a natural face wash and lotion that isn’t greasy, not easy for me. I f I don’t win, I am still going to check out Plain Jane!
July 2nd, 2009 at 1:16 pm
What do struggle with and consequently skip most often?
Shaving
I will plan outfits around being able to avoid shaving my legs.
July 2nd, 2009 at 3:08 pm
I struggle with putting sunscreen on. I do not like the way it smells, and I’ve tried different brands. And I used to struggle with packing my lunch to work too, until I started preparing my lunch the night before.
July 2nd, 2009 at 5:30 pm
I don’t have a routine in the morning, except to shower and get dressed. But I must say, I have fewer products in my bathroom now. I love the natural soaps, lip blams, I haven’t tried shampo yet, just found out about it, so that will be my next purchase. I’ve always hated all the chemicals and ingredients you can’t pronounce in most products. I am starting to buy all natural. I have natural laundry detergeant which makes the clothes smell much nicer and cleaner than store brand. By end of year, there won’t be too many products I buy in the store.
I don’t usually enter giveaways, but this one I really hope to win. I would love to try the mask. so far I haven’t found one that doesn’t dry my skin. If it’s anything like the other products, it’s got to be good.
My favorite lip balm is Plain Janes !!
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:19 pm
HI EVERYONE! Thanks so much for your responses–and for some of the kind customer comments. :) I’m with you on the morning routine but find that a little treat in the beauty department goes a long way for me. Of course, my bathroom looks like a Plain Jane warehouse! Natural skin care-whether mine or someone else’s-is definitely worth the switch. Can’t wait to see who wins!
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:43 pm
I struggle with my hair. I don’t like spending so much time on it but as I get older I really do have to spend more time for poorer results – just being honest here!.
July 2nd, 2009 at 8:47 pm
Since I became a stay-at-home mom two years ago, I have struggled with just putting on makeup in the morning! I can wash my face, brush my hair, brush my teeth, but there just didn’t seem to be a point when I wasn’t going anywhere (especially the first year when my husband was deployed). I hate putting on foundation, but I really need it. I’d like to find something better than liquid though, maybe a good power that works.
July 2nd, 2009 at 10:20 pm
I’m always skipping the make-up step in my morning routine. Not because I don’t love the stuff (who doesn’t want to look cute?!?), but because I hate all the remover and gunky pores in the evening. Maybe some of that fab soap would encourage me not too skip that step, hint hint!
July 3rd, 2009 at 2:06 am
i skip flossing. maybe that’s gross to some people but i only floss when there’s a problem or daily the week prior to seeing the dentist. I hate flossing.
btw- i’m in Germany, but if i win, i’m sending this to my mom in the US. she would like it =)
July 3rd, 2009 at 2:39 am
I struggle with allergies to so many of the chemical ingredients in cleaning, moisturing products. I’m very, very sensitive.
July 3rd, 2009 at 6:28 am
I often skip a face washing in the morning & yes I realize how ridiculous that is! I just forget!
July 3rd, 2009 at 9:06 am
What great products! With small children, I’m definately interested in decreasing the number of chemicals in our home. And I’m struggling with what to use for baby, who has reacted to the “extras” in commercial rice cereal, and the adhesive on band-aids, among other things.
July 3rd, 2009 at 10:34 am
I’m often tempted to skip my sunscreen. I generally don’t, but it is tough to make myself slather it on every day.
July 3rd, 2009 at 11:50 am
I have the worse skin! Its dry when I was it,and greay in 5 minutes, then the acne, and enlarged pores you can see from outer space ugh! One thing I always use and can’t live without is sunscreen, lather it up everywhere, even though I don’t burn..but don’t want any age spots down the line.
July 3rd, 2009 at 12:05 pm
Struggle with and often skip: blow drying my hair (and flossing…unless of course there’s a dentist appt right around the corner).
July 3rd, 2009 at 2:50 pm
It’s really hot where I live (110 degrees F) so finding the energy & motivation to blow dry my hair & put on makeup is really hard. It’s just going to melt off anyway!!
July 3rd, 2009 at 6:29 pm
I probably struggle most with putting on body lotion. My skin is dry, and I really need to do it, but I usually don’t have time to put it on and then wait a few minutes before finishing getting dressed. I’m much better about doing it at night because I have more time.
July 3rd, 2009 at 6:36 pm
I spend the most time on my hair especially in the summer. Humidity and naturally curly hair do not mix!
July 3rd, 2009 at 8:15 pm
p.s. It’s not that I’m lazy! I have children (guess I thought that was rather a given after reading the other comments. :)
I pump full time for the youngest (7x/day) so by the time I get around to other stuff, time for myself is limited. Haha!! Every other mom in the world can relate, I’m sure!
July 4th, 2009 at 4:35 pm
I am so particular about my hair that this is what takes up my time in the morning-fussing around with my ‘do!
July 6th, 2009 at 7:20 am
I shower before bed so mornings are easy– splash my face with water, brush my teeth, put in my contacts, slather on the 100SPF sunscreen and I’m out the door. I have an awesome handcream made by a friend of mine and olive oil soap I couldn’t live without!
