We are in the process of downsizing. We are going from our cottage to a condo. Hopefully the closing will be this coming week. I find it rather daunting to try to figure what to keep and what not to!! It is the problem of guests. If we didn't have our kids and grands and siblings visiting we wouldn't need much at all.....but we have to have extra blankets, sheets, towels, places to sleep for them......I am going to be really thinking all of this through in the next few weeks if the closing comes to pass.

I love reading about your life in Germany -- even when you're not there. You make me feel like I could also live with a wardrobe and space for five pairs of shoes. Of course, every time I try to downsize, Mr. Savvy has a minor tantrum. So what if I tried to get rid of the couch that one time? Sheesh.

Sorry for taking so long n a response, Gretchen. The answer is that we bought the apartment. Most Germans actually tend to rent for life when they find a place they like. It's very rare that someone would move at all (most especially to the extent that we do). Still we plugged a lot of numbers to make sure owning would be the smart choice. Obviously ownership was what sealed the deal on such an extensive kitchen remodel. Sorry to leave you in the air.

One thing that I always wondered is whether the apartment in Germany belongs to you, as in did you buy it, or are the landlords just wonderful when it comes to renovating their spaces? If it is a rental, how long is the lease? It would have to be pretty long to be worth the effort and expense. That said, it is a wonderful renovation.

You reign supreme when it comes to wants vs. needs. It is hard for me to imagine.

Katie thank you so much for answering my questions so thoroughly:-) I have to say I'm jealous that you only do laundry once a week, my husband's a mechanic & my son is two next week so needless to say from grease & dirt I do too much laundry!! We also might put our house on the market soon & we would be moving across the country into a smaller house so we've been getting ride of a lot of stuff by donating & having a yard sale. Even if we don't sell it's nice that we now have less packed full closets & cupboards as long as we don't fill them with stuff again!! Thanks again:-)
