Flying Over Arches National Park
Chances are, if you’ve spent much time in the Western United States, you’ve probably come to recognize this symbol on the Utah license plate:
It’s Delicate Arch, the 52 foot, freestanding arch of sandstone that every Utah native I’ve ever met gladly boasts about. And they should. Imagine having Arches National Park in your home state. I want to say something about how it’s one of the Must Sees for every American, though maybe that would sound funny since I was the only US citizen on our trip between me, Martin, and our German guests (remember the culture shock our friends had in the suburbs?).
After we flew around Canyonlands, we zoomed over to Arches National Park. We couldn’t fly any lower due to aviation regulations. So despite my joking suggestion, Martin wasn’t willing to attempt to fly through the arches. Still, I bet you’d like to see Delicate Arch from the air, right? Here are two angles for you to enjoy:
Can you spot Delicate Arch? I’ll admit that I’m the one who took the picture, and I still have to pause for a moment. So how about a friendly little cheat sheet?
We flew a big circle around the Arch and snapped a shot from the other side, too. Can you spot it here?
And a handy little key for that one -
That about wraps up our trip to Canyonlands and Arches National Parks as Martin prepares to surrender the pilot’s seat for me. I’m still pinching myself for getting such a great view. Any fun summer plans in the works at your house? Sometimes, there’s nothing so nice as a getaway from home for a bit.

Wow those are just fabulous pictures Katie. I love love love them! And I would love for you to tell me how you were able to type on your pictures. Is that a photoshop tool? I’m so computer illiterate it’s not even funny. I have been to Utah a couple of times, but haven’t been to see this particular park yet – I’m adding to our list of must-see destinations.
Fun summer plans you ask? Well, we’re heading to Ocean City MD this weekend – spending Memorial Day weekend with my folks at the beach. Should be fun! And we’re heading to Chicago in July for Matt’s birthday and the BlogHer conference. Woo-hoo! Wish you were going too!

I spotted the arch in the second photo with no cheat sheet! For some reason I feel immensely proud of that. Amazing shots – the desert is so beautiful, and in a wholly different way than the intense green of the Pacific Northwest where I live.
We have no fun summer plans, other than tolling the kids around to the local carnivals and events. Which, actually, is something I enjoy far more than spending time in a plane or trapped in a car with my little hooligans.

No fun summer plans here. P just got a new job and they always jip you on vacation when you start in the middle of the year. Though he does get all national holidays off so maybe we will escape somewhere…. I need ideas.

I’m loving all these pictures. So different from my urban midwestern existence! I definitely needed the cheetsheat, though.

You know I have lived here most of my life and have never seen the Delicate arch from that perspective! Wow your photos were fantastic. I do have to admit Utah is an amazing place!
