Another Katie I Love
A lot of Europeans really love techno. I personally opt for NO sound over techno. That heavy boom-da boom-da reet reet is enough to make me want to walk out the door and shiver. But once I get past the local love of techno, I really have to say that there is some amazing music coming out of Europe. The little musician on this video happens to be one of our family favorites:
The British singer, Katie Melua, was introduced to us by a couple of friends in Munich several years ago. I have never heard her on the radio in the US since, and the only people I’ve known in the US who talk about her is, well, us. Meanwhile, every European we’ve met knows about Katie Melua and loves her. (I haven’t befriended any die-hard techno fans, as you can guess.)
Remember when I told you about our favorite American band a couple months ago? And remember how I told you that we loved to listen to them while we worked on the house? They were in rotation with Katie Melua. Varnishing our table and caulking the sink never feel so tedious with good music playing. I love her music; Martin loves her music. It’s rare that I can say that about us.
We’re curious about what you think. Love it? Hate it? If you’re hooked like us, Amazon offers her music. (We recommend this cd.) I’m also really curious… has anyone outside of Europe heard of Katie Melua?

We live in Virginia. My husband was given a Katie Melua CD by a British work associate. We haven’t really listened to it yet, but now we will listen to it in the car on our way to Easter with the in-laws!
Love your blog. I have been fascinated by your life in Germany, but will continue reading once you have moved, of course!

Oh I just love discovering new artists to love, and since my husband is british and I wish I was too, I love discovering new British artists even more. I just ordered that cd you recommended. FUN! Thanks for this fun post!

My husband and I were introduced to Pink Martini through your blog post and really enjoy their music very much — so much that he downloaded all of their albums and burned enough cd’s for everyone in our family to have one in every room or car. He’s a nut. Anyway, I listened to clips from the Katie Melua cd you recommended and think that I like the blues songs the best so far. I will put my personal music investigator (my husband) on the case and definitely find out more about her music!

I liked the song a lot. That’s the kind of music I like actually. But then I’m an oldie and listen to Carole King, Dan Fogelbery and the like.I will look for Katie’s music too.

I’ve never heard of her, but from that video I’m a fan. Love her voice.

I’ve never heard of her before, but I love her now.

I’ve never heard of her before, I’m Canadian.
Great song! My 4-year-old also gives her the thumbs up. :)

#1 – European tastes in music kills me. I lived over there at the time that that one song was popular – la da da de, la da da da, la da da de, la da da da da. Ha ha, I can’t remember the name, so you probably have no idea what I’m talking about, but the song is annoying.
#2 – I love Katie Malua!! She reminds me a lot of Norah Jones, and Nine Millions Bicycles is one of my faves. :)

I’ve heard her and really like her stuff. And yes, Europeans have odd taste in music. Sunshine Life plays non-stop techno. I flip right past it when I’m changing stations on the radio!
BTW, big thanks to Kristal for putting that stupid song in my head. I don’t know the name of it either, but I know that song. And I hate it. Ack.

I’m not very fond of Katie, but everyone else around is crazy about her! Extremely popular.
Techno is Very typical for Germany (and maybe Eastern Europe?) but not for the rest of Europe! We have moved past that ;-)

I love Katie Melua! I live in Southern California and came across her song “Just Like Heaven” on Pandora.com (you should check that out if you are ever stuck at your computer for any length of time)! FYI: I love your blog too!!

I really like Katie Meula’s music. It does tend to get stuck in my head though (but that’s not a bad thing!) My two favorite songs are There are 9 Million Bicycles in Bejing and also the one about the piano keys being black and white.

YES to Katie Melua, she is great!! She performed live in the church when one of our Prince’s got married a few years ago. They had heard her music, fell in love with it, and asked her to perform on their wedding day, quite an honor IMO!!
Marian from the Netherlands, yes Europe, lol
