Stumped by German China – Help Us?
All older German women seem to love two things: lace window treatments and white china with blue onions, flowers, and birds on them. These things are sold everywhere in Berlin from the one euro store and thrift shops to KaDeWe, Europe’s second largest department store.
I know nothing about the lace.
My knowledge of the dishes is about as strong as my German. I do know that the onions vary in size and color depending on where your dishes come from. Some are from countries that don’t even exist (like East Germany and Czechoslovakia); others are hot off the press. None of the manufacturers seem to make their dishes in the same size.
We don’t have curtains yet, and we certainly don’t plan on the lace. Yet somehow, we have several of the blue onion-flower-bird dishes in our kitchen. The egg cups are useful, so is the little candy dish. The thing is, I have no idea what this onion fella is:
The other question, of course, is why we have it. I don’t know.
Can you help us identify it? Or better yet, have any creative ideas on how it could be used? Martin says it’s a napkin holder, so the thingamagigger is posing with a fork. I say it’s too small for napkins.
Please, oh please. What do you say?

How about a holder for toast – say an individual serving and each diner has his own. The English love toast racks!!I don’t know about the Germans tho…

I was going to say recipe card holder? Do the German’s use recipe cards?

Hi! I stumbled on your site a little while ago, and I love it. As someone who has always wanted to live abroad it is fun to see all things about Germany! I think the china piece is a napkin holder. I think you fold them in half and lay in the crease?

It looks like a business card holder or a napkin holder.

Greetings from Colorado! My guess is that the piece is a napkin holder. I enjoy your site and love all things German. I have searched (in vain) for books at my local library to study up on German culture and so I have looked for sites on the web to help. I’ve heard Germans decorate a lot for Easter and would love to see some photos of Easter decorations/traditions. I’m also wondering if you know of any German housewives who have blogs that one could follow. Thanks so much!

It looks like a place card holder.

Hello,
I just stumbled about your blog … and I am German. :-)
I am not entirely sure what this is – but my first guess would also be a napkin holder. As already said by someone above – you fold the napkins in half (I think most do that diagonally) and put in a bunch. But I am also not entirely sure …
I am pretty sure though that it is not a toast holder – even though you might be able to use it that way. As far as I know we don’t have toast holders. And I have also never seen a recipe card holder as something typically german … and I think for a place card holder it looks a bit big …
So well, sorry that I am not of real help … but just another guess …

Although I’m sure this isn’t its original purpose, what about a mail organizer? Could be pretty handy. :) I have a bunch of blue onion china myself, and I’ve never run across that little guy before! P.S. Great blog!!

I would use it as a holder for my coasters (since I have the ultra cheap thin ones), but I think it is originally for holding folded napkins. My Martin always folds them into triangles. Try that and see if it works.
I think toast “holders” are more like toast “racks” and hold more than one piece.

Oh, and this design goes further than just in the kitchen. It could also be a letter holder. I think the original maker was Meissen. Maybe you could write them or go into an antique shop for more advice.

Looks like a business card holder, if it’s too small for napkins…
March 19th, 2009 at 2:40 pm
I think it looks like a place card holder.

It is a place card holder. I have inherited 12 sets of china (this is what happens when you are the only grandchild on both sides of the family, and both sides have kosher meat, kosher dairy, passover meat, passover dairy), so I am well-versed in china.

Something is wrong with my blogger account – your post JUST appeared in my reader, but there are nine other commenters – from as early as this morning! UGH!
I think it’s a napkin holder and you fold the napkins over before placing them in it. But it sounds like others might know more than I do.
I hope you’re all better now!

Damn cute is what it is. Some old lady things are so awesome.
March 19th, 2009 at 5:52 pm
It looks like the perfect size for a business card holder.
March 19th, 2009 at 7:11 pm
It’s a toast caddy…keeps your toast from sweating and getting soggy…

This is a fun mystery. The onion is actually a pomegranate, which has a lot of symbolism including “abundance”. The Europeans didn’t know what pomegranates were, so they called them onions.
I’m pretty sure it’s a place card holder.

How fun – well, I think it’s either a) a napkin holder, or b) a letter/mail holder. Has anyone said that yet? :0)
March 19th, 2009 at 8:48 pm
Well, I would have said a place card holder or a coaster holder, but whatever I agree it’s cute. I love blue and white crockery.
March 19th, 2009 at 10:15 pm
It looks like a business card holder – but since it’s china, maybe it’s a placecard holder? My daughter suggested maybe it’s to hold toast – since there’s also an egg dish.

Well, I have no idea what it is, but I’ve loved reading all the comments. I think I recognize that fork. DATA from IKEA? I have them. The spoons are like tiny shovels. :)
March 20th, 2009 at 5:05 am
My Dutch grandmother had something similiar and it was used for napkins.
March 20th, 2009 at 8:02 am
I am catching up on blog reading. Right now I am catching up on yours. I have no idea what that is since I have never seen one before. But looks like you have several possible answers already. Better let us know when you find out what it really is.

Beautiful!!!!! I think it’s a napkin holder?!!
My Show n Tell is all about afghans today. If you can get a chance, do stop by. Happy Friday.

I think it is a napkin holder. The china is called “Cibulak” in Czech and the real one (not the knock offs) was really expensive. Have a wonderful weekend!
March 20th, 2009 at 9:08 am
We’ll certainly share the results. Martin’s having a great time reading what you’re all guessing or knowing about our little dish. We’ll keep you posted.
I’d say Mom in High Heels wasn’t kidding when she said she knows IKEA. Great eye–that sure is an IKEA fork!

My grandmother has one and uses it as a recipe card holder. We have a lot of that blue and white china stuff in the family…mainly from Holland though we are a German family!
March 20th, 2009 at 10:20 am
I say it’s a letter holder for (ugh!) bills and such.
March 20th, 2009 at 1:13 pm
Okay, I just showed Martin. His family has the set, as well, and he said it is definitely not a place card holder and mumbled something about Germans and…… I don’t know if this is the EXACT thing his mom has (he is busy right now, so only glanced), but he said he thinks it is a napkin holder. Try to fold some small napkins (like napkins people would use for tea) and see if they fit. Then, come back on here and tell us if it works. I am so curious now!
March 20th, 2009 at 1:30 pm
It looks like a place card holder for a fancy dinner where you put the person’s name so they know where they are sitting. It is very pretty!
March 20th, 2009 at 7:50 pm
I don’t know anything about German china, but it does look like a napkin holder. : )
March 21st, 2009 at 8:11 am
Wow! I loved reading through all the comments also– so many good ideas and interesting info!
I have no idea- but is pretty! And you’ve got yourself what looks like a multi-tasking cute little piece there:)
Enjoy!

I think it is a place card holder. Very pretty…sounds like you have a collection starting!
March 23rd, 2009 at 9:06 am
someone already said what I was going to: that it’s a napkin holder, but you could use it to hold mail!
March 30th, 2009 at 5:02 pm
Found your site over in Small Spaces on Flicker. I’m downsizing from 1600 to 600 and struggling!
I do agree with your friend that this is a placecard holder. But I use the one I picked up to hold a deck on cards on it’s side. I’ve also used it to hold the non-sugar sweetners.
It’s too cute to hide it away!
March 31st, 2009 at 11:02 am
I’d say napkin holder…or maybe mail holder??
April 4th, 2009 at 6:26 am
It’s definitely a napkin holder. Qutie common in Germany…
