A Simpler Life Series 4: Take a Little Break
Part of a living a simpler life absolutely has to be finding the time to kick back a little.
I, of course, have absolutely no experience in this. After all, I move to Europe and what do I do? Start remodeling a kitchen before I even have a mattress to sleep on. Slowing down a little is my worst habit. How about you? Some signs that you could use a do-nothing moment:
If you’re guilty of all of them like me, care to take up a challenge with me? Life is too short to run around constantly. We could benefit from slowing down a little. We have all of these conveniences like cars and cell phones. Instead of making life easier, it means we’re constantly running errands. It isn’t like Little House on the Prairie where Pa used to go to town once a month. Oh no. We’re heading out all the time, and we’re on our cell phones with urgent calls through the entire process.
Sometimes I have to trick myself into chilling out. I do things like getting lost in Berlin on purpose or walking to German class instead of taking public transportation or my bike. If I were a kid, the thoughts in this poem are how I’d trick myself. I wrote it just for all of you. A simpler life could be a really good life.
on a seesaw in Berlin
INSTEAD OF STANDING STILL
The opposite of standing still
is rolling down a grassy hill
or running from a laughing man
with a squirt gun in his hand.
The opposite of standing there
is running around everywhere
or hopping down a country road
to snatch a slimy toad.
The opposite of standing here
is prancing like a baby deer
or being told it’s time for bed
when you had plans instead.
But opposite of constant speed
is the pause from moving that I need.
So I’ll take a little breathing break
and be a sunning snake.

Very sweet. I love the poem. I promise I will take your advice as soon as my quilt is completed (there is a deadline for this, and I know it won’t go longer than that). I know I am one of those you described.

What a breath of fresh air this post is. I multitask to the extreme and it’s good just to hear somebody say I can slow down sometimes.

What a cute poem! Do you plan on creating a children’s book of poems? I also love the picture you put above the poem. Very fitting! If it had a title it would be the child within every adult!

I always need a break. I like the picture of the see-saw and my daughters were surprised there would be see-saws around just for people to play on. They thought that was really cool.

Just last night my husband and I were talking about this very issue. I have this overwhelming desire to be productive! He challenged me now that the bulk of move in details are done (and miscellaneous ones will linger for months as I search for the right armoire to put our winter coats and an antique secretaire for one wall of the office, etc) – but for now he challenged me to take time to just BREATH to take time to sit in cafes, to buy ready made dinner instead of preparing 3 courses, to give myself permission to not try to be perfect. So your post came at a good time – reiterating the need for a break. (Of course, with 2 sets of guests coming to stay and 2 work trips back to Holland in the next month – that’s easier said than done! But as for today, I’m going to take his suggestion and just linger!) Good Luck to you with the lingering… it sounds like we are two peas in a pod!

I plead guilty to rarely ever actually seeing a movie, I am always doing something in tandem. Guilty of dusting, loading or unloading the dishwasher, or folding clothes while on the phone. Guilty of cleaning my car, balancing the check book, or tidying up my purse while waiting. Gee, I guess stillness does not come naturally to me either. Love the little poem as a reminder to slow down and enjoy the moment.
