And Then There Was Sun. In Berlin!
If there’s one thing all of Europe is known for in the winter, it would be the cloudy, dreary days. My sunscreen rituals from life in the US are no longer necessary, and I’m popping Vitamin D per doctor’s orders. It’s all very weird. I used to dream of being snowed in every winter; now I dream of a sunny day. I even sing that song. “Oh Mr. Sun, Sun, Mr. Golden Sun…”
And guess what? My dream came true. (The sun, not the snow.)
My father-in-law is a wonderfully talented photographer. He took our wedding pictures, and now he’s taken pictures of our kitchen for us. I love to watch him work, and I love how he captures the sunlight on our cabinets. It’s much better than my rainy day pictures last week. Let me give you a peek. He moved our pear green dishes from the drawer and put them on the shelf in front for a little punch of color.
He also moved the level we were using to conveniently hide the missing trim under the radiator (oh geez). Then there’s the visible hole in the floor from the wall we ripped out (ahh).
Just focus on the sun, people. The sun!

I’m jealous. All we have is rain, rain and more rain. A peek of the sun would be so awesome. Just a peek. Your FIL does take nice photos. I like the green dishes in the front, though I know why you put them where you do.
Hey, where are the wedding photos? I want to see those!

Yay for sun! It’s shining on me right now…but we got a LOT more of it down here. The photos look great. Do you think you’ll keep the dishes there? It’s not NEARLY as convenient as the drawer for emptying the dishwasher, but they do look good there!

So glad you had a sunny day — and what amazing photographs. You should get them framed so in fifty years you can look back on your first little home in Berlin. I want your father-in-law to come to my house and document each room! Lucky you! I love the green splash of color too! So cute.
I wish we had a trip to Wales planned for ’09, but it’s unlikely. I swear, if we go in ’10, I’m arguing for Berlin as our other destination…(we normally try to hit one new place in Europe via easyjet, etc, since we’re already over there!). How fun would that be!
Okay – now you need to post some of your wedding photos!!! pretty please!

Your kitchen absolutely glows~and it looks like a magazine shot! Love those dishes out in the open, at least for the pic:)

Pictures are beautiful!! The dishes look wonderful there too. I agree it is just not as convient and the drawer. However it is convienent to the table.

Lovely light :). Vitamin D — I take that too (trying to fix my deficiency). We don’t get much sun here in the winter either.

I love it! Your kitchen looks amazing! I, too, love the green dishes on display there and I NEVER would have noticed the missing trim! You’ve done an amazing job!!!

I’m feeling warm already :o) Have a wonderful weekend!

Your kitchen looks spectacular, especially in the sun! Those photographs look like they belong in a magazine-the green dishes are an especially nice touch.

Thanks for all the kind comments. Isn’t Thomas amazing?!
We haven’t decided about the dishes now. I think we’ll put them back in the drawer, though it’s fun to play with different ideas. We’re totally function over form people.
And I suppose I’ll have to get brave and share some wedding pictures one of these days now that I’ve brought it up, huh?!

I love the green dishes on the shelves. But what will you put in the drawer now?

Wow, what awesome pictures! :o)

Wow, those photos are great, Katie! I love how he moved those green dishes (that I like so much) to the front like that. What a great eye he has. I’m happy for you that you got some sun, too!

Oh, how I love sunlight spilling into my home through the windows. And I must be part cat because I love feeling the warmth on me as I read by the window. If I were there I’d be sharing lovely pics of the missed sunshine too!
I love the photos and his artful rearrangement of the dishware. If you do put them back out of sight, I hope you’ll place other large and same-colored/monochromatic pieces in the space. I think their placement enhanced the room more than the smaller pieces than didn’t stand out to me in the picture.

I like the green dishes there, too, but the “function” isn’t as great as the drawer. Especially if you plan on having any babies over!

Those are really lovely photos. All I see is the beautiful kitchen, I don’t notice the imperfections. (And after a while you won’t either).

Wow, really nice. It’s amazing what you’ve made out of the kitchen and surroundings in such a relatively short time!
We had some lovely weather in Holland too, the last couple of days. Just blogged about it (and I’m in english now! ;-) )

I was just commenting to my last week that I thought you should display your pretty dishes, not hide them away in the drawer. But I was thinking some open shelving on the wall next to the oven. It looks great at the end of the counter!

Nice space and I am loving the green dishes
