Why spend money when you don’t have to? That seems to be our motto around here these days, and Valentine’s Day is no exception. Here are a couple of Valentines we put together with bits and pieces that were otherwise destined for the trash. Don’t you just love a bit of repurposing?
The first Valentines we made were just little notes like the ones we all used to exchange in elementary school. Instead of buying cards, we cut up a cornflakes box. The text came from an old Business Week I’d been hoarding from Christmas… well except the word “love”, obviously. That word didn’t seem to come up in my magazine. A couple markers, stamps, and colored pencils later, and here’s what we got:
Next, we had an old gift bag. (By “we”, you can probably guess that it was more “I” with Martin occasionally entering the scene to sign his name before we popped the cards in envelopes.) So we pulled out the cardboard insert and drew a quick, crooked design. We poked little holes along the drawing with a needle, and sewed from hole to hole until this:
became this:
Then to wrap things up, we used a heart-shaped hole punch and started attacking some junk mail. We cut the header off some old letterhead paper Martin’s family had, glued the hearts on it, and made a few cards. Too easy!
The possibilities for handmade valentines are endless when you stop thinking about the things in your house as trash and start looking at them as building blocks for handmade projects. Plus it’s so much more fun than grabbing a quick card at the store sometimes.
What could you make with the things in your house? We’d love to hear about the valentines you’re giving.

So cute, Katie!
Speaking of art and trash, I completely forgot to tell you that I know a girl who makes art out of trash/scraps. Maybe I’ll be able to take you to one of her exhibitions or projects when you get back and introduce you. It’s not all she does, but a big thing.
Here is her website:http://www.dearyuka.com/

I just found your blog through ‘the inspired room’.
I have SO enjoyed looking around! I recently just returned from a visit to Germany. My brother lives near Stuttgart. Your ‘Berlin Tour’ section was great! Even though I am sure the convenience would be nice, it was so refreshing to go into the market and not have all the prepackaged stuff. And oh, your picture of the crepery! Made my mouth water. I LOVED the nutella crepe!!!
I also read your recent post about the cookies. So funny. We kept seeing the ‘sneeballs’ and they looked so yummy. What a disappointment! I’d take your cookies any day over those!
If you have time, check out my blog… I have some great pictures from Germany (January).
Have you been to Rothenburg au Tauber? It is fantastic. I highly recommend it on the off season. Same with Fussen. Both are so quaint! I know it will be a drive, but definitely worth it!
Can’t wait to read more German experiences!

Those are really cute. I always encourage my young children to make their valentines to bring to their friends at school instead of buying them the Spiderman (or whatever pop culture figure) pre-made ones. I basically put out colored paper, glue, glitter, scissors, doilies, and markers and let them create something. They are usually good for their age, but you gave me some good ideas about cutting words out and looking through my junk mail and old magazines for stuff.

I am so impressed, and inspired. I hadn’t given much though to our valentines yet…I only know that I want to make them, and I want to include a photo of Ms. Foo’s face. I’ll let you know what I come up with. I was going to try to tell you which one of yours I like the best, but after scrolling through them several times, I still like them all equally! So crafty, Katie!

Oh and one more thing I meant to comment was your line about “we used a heart shaped hole punch”….like everyone has one of those. Too funny! Where did you get that? Michaels? Or another type of craft store? You know what I would love to see, and I bet your other readers would to? A post about your crafting supplies and where in the world you keep them in that tiny home of yours!

haha! Good point, Christy. I brought that hole punch with me from the US. I probably got it at JoAnn’s Fabric.
I’ve heard of people finding tiny punches in Germany at the euro store (like dollar store-haha!), though I haven’t come across anything like them myself.
