Why We’re Planning on Running Away (aka The Project List Expands)
There is nothing more miserable than feeling like you have no control over your home or your clutter. Martin and I put a lot of things in boxes just to get them out of the way until the kitchen remodel is done. We can never find anything because nothing has a designated spot except our tools. Half of our stuff is in boxes; the other half is trying to find a designated space. None of our furniture can even rest in it’s designated space because a tarp divides our living space. Only the chop saw and screwdrivers have assigned homes, and I’m hoping they’re not permanent fixtures around here.
My husband and I have worked on a number of projects together… we’ve just never had to live in them. There’s a reason I don’t talk to you about our renovation every day. You can imagine that we’re progressing, but I just can’t handle thinking about it any more. Right now, our home doesn’t serve as a relaxing place where we can get away from things. It’s often the last place we want to be. And when we want to run away, we can’t decide if we want to do it together or just be absolutely totally alone, which is impossible in a city of 3.5 million people.
We left Berlin one weekend before we started varnishing. We loved escaping. But when we came back, I’m sorry to report that we weren’t relaxed when we put the key in the door. We were stressed and cranky with the state of our entire home.
The worst part is realizing how well I have blocked out many of the things that would normally frustrate me. Like the fact that my husband hangs his coat on a bike… which actually makes me happy because it’s not on a chair or the table, which are the only other places he could put it. It also means that I get to hang mine on the bedroom door.
Now we have two choices as we finish up the major projects in the kitchen:
- wrap up the kitchen remodel with the rest of the house undone and start all over with a new tarp next year, or
- keep on truckin’ and get it all done with already

The lucky winner is number one. I know you saw that coming. We’ve decided to leave our tarp up a little bit longer than planned, which the live-for-the-moment bit of us isn’t too happy about. It’s the smaller part of us and probably loses every time like our coin has two heads and no tails. So here’s a little of what we’ve got planned for more marriage testing… err remodeling:
- Our very German, very irritating bathroom (you just have to see it for yourself so we can be confused together)
- A bench for taking our shoes on and off and storing them in the hallway
- Martin’s desk (that’s a post in itself because the two of us have very different preferences… like the fact that I don’t want to see his soldering iron in my living room on Christmas morning)
- A system for hanging our bikes where I will not be smacking into them every time I walk to the bathroom
- A coatrack since the bikes will no longer be an option
In the meantime, I’m going to keep varnishing and being as sweet and patient as I can like a good Valentine should be. I hope you can wait out the storm with us. I hope Martin can with his little wifey, too!
I promise some beautiful pictures soon.

Oh my gosh! I can totally relate! We have a little more space than you guys, but the fact that many of our things are still in boxes stacked in random places around the house, waiting for us to paint/organize/remodel is driving me nuts. I just keep thinking, “If only I had one room completely done, then this wouldn’t be so bad” (probably because I could just hide away in that one room and never come out?). Anyways, hang in there! You guys are doing a great job!!

I can certainly recommend a bench for shoes (I have a photo of it nicely organised on one of my pages :) ) and also a coat rack is a must. Good Luck!

Wow! You two are amazing! The most we ever did in a rental was repaint every room. We started with the baby’s bedroom so he could nap in peace, it had been a dark dark blue,. Then our bedroom which was a dark gold. The bathroom was next. It was a hideous dark purple. The kitchen came next, I cannot remember what scary color that was. Finally the living room which was a dark gold. As the rooms were complete, we found ourselves avoiding the living room and gravitating to the painted rooms. I painted everything a very pleasant off white, preferring to accent with colorful curtains, bedspreads, couches, pillows, etc.
That was stressful enough for me. I remember one day I painted all day, barely tending to my sweet baby. I regret that choice even to this day, and he is now 34.
I couldn’t have handled any more than painting, so I salute you two. I could NEVER do it.

I am an electrical engineer. I sort of wish I had a soldering iron of my own, although I will concede they aren’t very pretty.
As for the remodeling, that put a real strain on our marriage too when we bought this house. You can’t really understand how very difficult it is to live with the chaos until you do it. Good luck to you guys, it will be worth it when you’re done, as long as you can hang in that long!

Your place is coming along beautifully, Katie! Yes, it would be nice to be able to relax in a dust and construction-free home, but it will be all worth it in the end. There IS a light at the end of the tunnel, don’t worry =)
Our home projects have been the source of many cranky hours and arguments. But we pledged to just focus on one room at a time to keep our overwhelming to-do list manageable. It’s still hard to remember the more important things in life, though.
Hang in there!

Trust me, you will enjoy it SO much more when it’s done knowing you did it. We remodeled our last house completely and lived in it during the remodel. At the time it was a pain, but now I forget just how much it drove me crazy and I kind of miss it.

Thank you for all the bits of encouragement, everyone. I think Martin’s jaw nearly dropped that Amber doesn’t have a soldering iron. Something about the piece of equipment being attached to his hip…
Thank you for the wisdom of appreciating the people, not the things, Annie. That was so beautifully put!

We’ve been remodeling our little office. I still don’t have it put together and I’m going nuts. For example, I can’t just transfer files from the old cabinet to the new. Oh no. I must sort through the files, shredding old papers, deciding which files don’t even need to exist. It’s mind-numbing. And your renovation sounds much much more extensive. yikes.

I have lived through a couple of renovations myself, and can attest that it is worth it, but boy is it draining! Good luck with the rest of your projects – I can’t wait to see and hear all about them!
