Two Inspiring Kitchens & Our Own
This morning, I found myself leaning a little closer as I looked at this picture Freckles Chick had in her inspiration folder. I suddenly found myself wishing our ceilings were twice as high so that we could hang pretty chandeliers. Do you see that beautiful kitchen space back there? It’s so small you almost miss it.

And something from this kitchen at Apartment Therapy makes me want to start a cooking frenzy. Those glass jars are just begging all of us to reach out and make something delicious.

So while we can’t raise the ceiling of our own kitchen and take advantage of even more vertical space, Martin and I do talk about adding a couple of open shelves to our kitchen. We have a space between the window above the sink and the large picture window on the left of the kitchen.
Want to see? We’ve got the last cabinets put in (no doors yet), a dishwasher, and the start to our recycling system. The open shelves would be in that half yellow/half white area where I ran out of paint.

Maybe some open shelves will appear in the future. Then again, my head carpenter is kind of getting sick of living in a remodeling project, and he’s thinking a framed picture would do just fine. I do need a space for all my little glass jars and those egg cups Germans are so crazy about, though. Stay tuned…

My vote is for a few tightly packed racks – so you can display spices exactly like that second picture did on the left. Kitchen heaven right there!

I think that is a great place for some shelves!!

I think some shelves would look good there. The kitchen is looking great. I love the cabinets. Yellow matches the cabinets very nicely.

Oh Katie, those little shelfs would look just wonderful right next to your little window (and be practical, too, for your jars). You simply must talk Martin into it :o)

I do love open shelves – make the functional beautiful! I am reading a book right now called the Not So Big House Book, and there is a wonderful picture of a kitchen tucked into a beneath-the-stairs area – inspiring! :o)

Katie- I can’t believe I came across your site tonite! I am missing my grandmother who just passed away at 90. She lived in Templehoff for many years- I remember going to the bakery early in the mornings when I would stay with her and the fresh strong coffee. I enjoyed your pictures.

You know we’re obsessed with a good before and after and your kitchen has all the makings of a spectacular transformation! Good luck with everything and of course post lots and lots of gorgeous pics when you’re done. Nothing like a little eye candy for home improvement junkies like us!

Don’t you just love that first photo? Even the small kitchen looks chic.
I LOVE open shelving!! I think it really opens up a space, too, as long as you streamline the contents. Go for it!
