3 Reasons I Love My Homeland, America
I voted by email yesterday; my husband did not. Despite the fact that he knows the Pledge of Allegiance and recited it every day in school, can pronounce “th” and “w” without a hitch, and fires up the grill on the 4th of July, he isn’t a US citizen. I didn’t vote just for me. I voted for us.
For American readers, why did you vote? Do you feel the spirit? I voted because we love my home country, even if we’re not there right now. I voted because:
- I love America for its peaceful democracy at work
- I love America for feeling like I can vote for whomever I wish without political pressure
- I love America for the lemonade, the BBQs, the wide open spaces, and all the joy that comes from the opportunities to enjoy these things and life
These opportunities are more important than paint colors on our walls. They’re more important than which chop saw we picked. Because without these things in the US or Germany, Making This Home would be the least of any of our worries.
I know it’s old news, but I wasn’t blogging then, and I thought I’d share a few pictures of the day Obama visited Berlin this summer. We didn’t expect to see a presidential candidate here. I think a lot of us could say that about Obama in our communities. Here he is speaking under the Victory Tower:
Trust me. Obama’s there!
And here’s everyone behind us. The 200,000+ crowd stretched to the Brandenburg Gate. It was beautiful. There were American exapts and tourists all around us.
People from Victory Tower to Brandenburg Gate
Hope your Wednesday is a wonderful one!
p.s. Never did see if the German Starbucks would give me a free coffee yesterday.

There are just too many reasons to list why I love America. Some are petty, some are significant, and some just wouldn’t make sense to anyone else. Some are the things we take for granted everyday as an American. We can practice any religion or NO religion, state our opinion freely, have ANY kind of job we want no matter our race, gender, or beliefs, marry whoever the heck we want to, and much more. I am grateful for the freedoms I have as a woman: driving, walking without a chaperone, working, voting, etc. There is readily available healthcare, clean water, food, and shelters for homeless. I love how America often serves as as a refuge for people around the world fleeing oppression and war. America is not perfect by any means. There are still many problems that need to be fixed which I think in this day and age, we will finally begin to change for the better! Thank you to all those who voted for change!

Wow! I wasn’t aware that he made his way to Germany, but it looks like it was an exciting visit. Good for you for voting even though you presently aren’t in The States. Too bad everyone HERE can’t feel the same sense of duty.

I voted because I believe it is my civic duty and obligation. I stand by the motto “don’t complain if you don’t vote.” I also like knowing I am playing a role in the direction my country is going which was especially true in this election.
Not enough people realize that politics impacts literally every aspect of our lives whether it’s the roads you walk and drive on, the quality of your schools, or even the cleanliness of the air you breathe. If you don’t vote, you aren’t fully participating in society and are basically saying you are just going to let things happen TO you instead of trying MAKE things happen and be an agent of change.

I LOVED this post! It is amazing to me that you took the time to vote via e-mail. I love hearing someone who lives so much (physically) removed from our country still has such fond feelings for it. So much so, that you would still take part in the democratic process. You said some great things!
