Bathroom Makeover Plans
I have been thinking. Maybe I ought to bring you back into our house a little more. You’ve seen our construction zone (ie kitchen/living room) that we can’t wait to update you on super soon. But there’s just a LITTLE more to our house that you haven’t seen. Starting with–oh isn’t this exciting–the bathroom.
There wasn’t really much to it.
Toilet, sink, the last tenants’ personal stuff on the left.
Tenants’ washing machine and stuff, shower, door! on the right.
And overhead, an awful picture of the even more awful light.
What’s a girl to do?
I could see white tile bathrooms being sort of spa-like, except this one is so small. Sit on the toilet, and you bang your knees into the washing machine. That doesn’t exactly spell luxury to me. Neither does the shower/door collision. Unlike the living room, we can’t rescue this room with a coat of paint because the white tiles go almost all the way to the ceiling (a common feature of German bathrooms). Obviously, it’s going to come down to decor.
Couple of things we could think about:
Enough about my place.
Yikes! That’s a lot of “I”. What about YOU? Have you ever had a room in your house that just Didn’t Make Sense? And how did you manage to fall in love with it? You know, as much as anyone could love a place like the bathroom.

Hello there –
I was thrilled to host the carnival. Glad you liked it! I had a fun time trying to figure everything out with the Daybook and everything, but I got it done! Glad you enjoyed it.
Make sure you post pictures when you finish making your bathroom. We have guys outside right now working on getting our laundry room done so we can put the washer and dryer out in it. (They are in our bathroom – the only one we have.) Our bathroom is not too small. It’s actually pretty large. But that is good, since now 11 people are living here! (My Grandma Starr just moved here from NM.)
Well, glad you stopped by and left a comment. :)
Love,
Rachel

I think I would be too tall to use that toilet! My knees wouldn’t fit behind the washing machine!
So are you thinking of getting rid of a dryer to make more room or are you saying you already don’t have a dryer? I haven’t used my dryer all year and it’s been great!

How we learned to love it :: gutted it! :) My bathroom is much better now. I wish I had pictures of our guest bath before and after…the before was terrible! So are you saying you don’t have a washer/dryer in one? Could you get one? Too bad you don’t have more room in your kitchen, you could put it in there under the counter. What about building a surround for the washer (?) with doors that slid into the side of the unit? Or if that takes too much room, just open…? Get a pretty shower curtain, nice looking bottles for the shampoo and the like… I think a built-in vanity is a good idea. Can you do recessed lighting in the bathroom? OH, and as for the tiles, have you seen these: http://2jane.com/mibo-tile-sticker-tattoos.aspx It’s so hard living with something, but it’s so exciting know you get to remodel it to your specifications!

Hi, Katie. Our last apartment was just a tad bigger than yours now. The bathroom, however, was HUGE! It made no sense. Our bed barely fit into our bedroom, but we had all kinds of extra space in our bathroom. Our new bathroom is so small in comparison. We’ve had to figure out all kinds of things. We put a closet under the sink, and we plan to buy a few shelves to go above the washing machine. Martin says “Germans don’t store their towels in their bathrooms” which kind of irritates me because I thought I could put my pretty new towels on these said shelves. Now, I have to figure out what to do with them once we get them. It just seems to make more sense to put nice towels there than extra rolls of toilet paper. Maybe I can try to bring some more American influence here than just my English and cooking. (Oh, and they do make stackable washer/dryers, but the energy cost of running one may not be worth it.)

Sorry for being so unclear in my post, all. I hadn’t seen any stackable washers and dryers here, Katie–so thanks for the heads up. The truth is, I only know of one couple that even has a dryer in Germany. Power is 2-3x as expensive as it is in the US, so since dryers suck up so much energy, most people in Europe go without. Dryers are more like a luxury than a necessity, I guess.
I wish it were easy enough to rearrange the fixtures in our bathroom. But did you see how thick the walls were in our kitchen? Oh MAN! I think we’ll try to live with the odd layout in this particular room.
Christina, thanks for the sticker link! That could be really cool.

Hi Katie
We have a washer/dryer in one unit from Miele. There are lots of companies that make them here and they are fairly efficient. Saves space and your sanity…because I personally can’t stand crunchy towels that have air dried the entire time!
The light is BEAUTIFUL! We had designer lamps like that in many of our rooms until we moved out of our first apartment here…but that had a lot to do with the ceilings being about 4m high and us not having a ladder to reach up there. As long as they didn’t burn out, we were ok. ;)
Definitely get yourself some sort of cabinet for under the sink! You can pick one up rather cheaply at quelle.de although they are a bit small. And a vanity above the sink is another must. Perhaps you can mount a cabinet above the washing machine? Just keep in mind that you’ll need to fill any holes in the tile you make when you move out!
Keep up the great work! ;)
