How to Customize Your Door Mat

A white powdery trail led across our living room and through the hall.  We’d been hauling those awful plaster bricks that we tore down out of the kitchen.  They went to the dump, and soon, their cabinet friends will be joining them.

It’s a good thing our door mat was safely out of harms way; it was drying.  Now it’s in its new home, and we’re loving the welcome feeling it’s already bringing.

Here’s how I made it:

  1. Picked up some acrylic paint that won’t wash out at the German craft store, Idee., and tried to accept the 3 buck price tag on each bottle when I was so used to the same products costing less than a dollar in the US.
  2. Sketched out a template and masked the areas I didn’t want to paint.  Tip:  You can’t really wipe your feet on the fibers that have been painted, so try to limit the amount of paint you’ll be applying.
  3. Pulled everything off before it was dry (because that’s how patient I am).
  4. Painted little leggies on the birds and dots around the inside of the square boarder.
  5. Slipped the rug somewhere that Martin would SEE but not STEP ON it when he got home.
  6. Slipped myself out the door to meet a friend.
  7. (several hours later)  Came home to hear Martin say he thought I’d bought a new mat (really?  cool!).  Then he spotted my dripping paintbrush at the sink (dang).
